Seed Libraries Struggle With State Laws Limiting Exchanges

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Gardeners at hundreds of spots around the country are sharing seeds as part of an increasing interest in locally grown food, but some agriculture officials say the well-meaning effort violates state laws.

In spots like Duluth, Minnesota, the conflict has surprised gardeners and library officials who never thought to examine the intricacies of state seed laws.

Agriculture officials say they weren’t looking for a fight but must enforce laws that are intended to protect farmers by ensuring seeds are viable, will grow the intended plant and aren’t mixed with unwanted seeds for weeds or plants.

Advocates of seed-sharing programs said they don’t necessarily blame agriculture departments, but some express frustration that laws focus on the needs of modern hybrid seed producers while limiting age-old, person-to-person seed exchanges.

I don't see a problem with people sending seeds in the mail to each other. It's not like they have to fill out a customs form. Just do it and shut up about it and there you go, no problem.

Good point. What this is referring to, I think, is seed swapping, and selling, at fairs, swap meets, farmer's markets, etc. More laws are being passed due to pressure from big conglomerates like Monsanto who are flooding the market with GMO seeds.

I see. Well, then they should be congratulated for opening up a whole, brand new underground seed railroad and seed black market. Nothing like repressive laws to create backlash.

Me too. That and "It's 1,2,3, what are we fighting for? Don't ask me now, I don't give a damn". And the Doors, especially Light My Fire. Those were fun times.

I agree...especially the long version of the Doors "Light My Fire." Great music back then.

Monsanto at work. Our entire food chain is at serious risk world wide. Don't take my word for it. Research it. Monsanto has not been able to cover all their tracks.

Yes, those were great songs. If I want to hear them, I need to do so on my pc speakers via Youtube. My preamp of 26 years no longer works, and the currently made ones don't have turntable inputs.
You need to replace them with separate phono preamps, and the end result is usually more distorted sound.

Still using the stereo I bought in 1984. Hafler electronics, Qysonic speaker array.
