Normalcy Bias - America's Downfall?

Normalcy Bias is the reasoning that makes people stay in their beach houses, thinking that they'll ride out the storm, only to be killed when the storm is the worst one to hit, ever.

Most Americans have a childlike faith that their President is a loyal American, dedicated to the welfare of the country and its people. Every past President was an American, native born. That he would turn out to have the mind of a foreigner, dedicated to the destruction of the nation, indoctrinated in philosophies at odds with everthing American is a thought so horrible that they can never go there. They would also have to admit to themselves that they have been fooled.

Folks, things are decidedly not normal. For the first time in America's history, a foreigner is President.

The founders feared a foreign president would destroy the republic, and they were correct.

Aabea, thanks for the heads-up!

Who knew Hawaii was a foreign country? Silly me. I thought it was our 50th state. Still can't figure out how they let me visit, without a passport or visa. The Hawaiian King, and their congress, should look much more closely into their lax border control rules.

Being that President Obama was born in this polynesian kingdom, why aren't the wingnuts demanding to see his naturalization papers, which he is obviously hiding from Fox News and the rest of us.

No, but anyone who has lived a while can remember times they got into trouble because they failed to heed the evidence that there was a problem.

That's interesting. FDR was American, born and bred, but people accused him of being a communist, a Nazi a socialist, a war monger, a secret british subject - and he was a democrat. Teddy Roosevelt, who came before him, had some of the same ideas, got the same names thrown at him - and he was a republican. I seriously doubt that it was the same people, doing the name calling.

No President has been popular with everybody, but this one takes the cake. He was elected - twice, by the majority of Americans. Which means, it's the minority who are making the most noise. All Presidents have their nay sayers and I expect this one will be making history in that respect. He's a communist, a socialist, a Nazi, a muslim, foreign born, black - and a democrat. He couldn't possibly win - but he did - twice.

The absurdity argument. O visited Pakistan when an American passport would not admit you to Pakistan. He would have to use a foreign, probably an Indonesian passport, making him a foreigner. Anyway, he may be physically American, but his formative years were Muslim in Indonesia.

lpnmajor,

These right wing extremists like the narrative of a foreign born usurper stealing "their America".

The alternative is to acknowledge that this is no longer their father's America. Demographics are changing and the Republicans can only respond like deer in the headlights. They scream like whiny 10 year olds ---that they were "cheated" instead of acknowledging that they sabotaged themselves by their refusal to adapt to a changing world.

I can see that you suffer from normalcy bias. All of the other presidents you mention spent their malleable years in America and were never Muslims.
That is the big diference.

WARNING! If your cats and/or dogs are talking to you, don't listen to them. They are communist plants who are trying to get you in trouble. Get a bird. They'll NEVER steer you wrong.

Then I imagine you cheer the systematic destruction of a nation that has occured, ever since JFK was murdered. Europe is suffering the same destruction with Muslim immigration that US is suffering with illegals. Democrats have had to import their constituents, because anyone with any knowledge of the founding of America votes Republican.

I know, but I hope ( yes, I'm a dreamer ) that at least 1 would wake up and that might just start a landslide, burying the rest under a pile of their own crap.

The problem with normalcy is defining it. What is normal?

We can observe that things are changing, but finding a baseline "normal" is the question. Psychology is a subjective field of study, which is why I asked if you were a psychologist.

Normalcy bias is only applicable if a discernible baseline is present. While our current president's nationality may be questioned, the normal media behavior of not questioning facts concerning all political persons the same is at least thirty years old.

Evidence of a problem is not necessarily the same as a discernible irregularity from a "normal" baseline. In this case the president's disdain for the United States of America is problematic, regardless of whether it is usual.

I don't know if our President is a US citizen. Even if he was born in Hawaii, he could have foresworn his natural citizenship. His disdain for our country is not unusual in that many people, including several commenters on this thread, mislike America.
