Matter of fact, wormholes exist. Twisting time and space is theoretically possible. Traveling via these methods requires an expenditure of energy orders of magnitude higher than anything we can produce. There may be other ways, but they are, indeed science fiction, or at least undiscovered.
Traveling at even a fraction of the speed of light opens a whole 'nother can of worms. Ever hear of a kinetic energy weapon? That is when an object traveling at an appreciable fraction of the speed of light impacts with something. It makes a boom comparable to a nuclear explosion. Space is not empty. It's plumb full of meteorites, cosmic detritus of various origins. I'm not sure of the exact physics, but how do you propose to protect the hull of the spaceship? Impacting with even a tiny piece of debris at the speeds we are talking about is going to cause some serious problems, and going any slower will entail a journey of thousands of years. Then again, in the 1820s, a very respected mathematician "proved" that traveling at 60 mph would cause an unprotected human to be crushed by the air pressure. Much of what is common scientific knowledge today was the vilest sort of sorcery 400 years ago, and would have gotten you an appointment with Tomas de Torquemada, if you were unfortunate enough to live in the demesnes of the Spanish Inquisition. There is no telling what sort of advancements will be made in even the next
50 years. Look at the last 50. For that matter, we went from horse and buggy to man on the moon in 70 years.
