This article is exactly right. The government makes it too easy to receive benefits and there are no stings attached.
Why should you work? I work in the subsidized housing industry and 90% that get subsidy don't appreciate it, they think it is OWED to them.

all you all brain dead??-why does welfare pay better than work?--hint- in most cases it doesn't-but consider the staggering unemployment (so just exactly 'where' are those jobs)rate coupled with starvation wages controlled by -well---'Fat Cat' 1 percent types-and just where do you think the 'money' the poor get goes?--well-right back into the revenue stream-as they BUY stuff-where do the 'profits' the 'Fat Cats' make go??-saving accounts in Switzerland, another house at the beach or lake, elevators for their 3-4 luxury cars--and oh yea-into their pockets cause they don't pay taxes-do you get the picture?-so who is really 'screwing' the country??-hint-it ain't the poor!!!

No one is brain dead here (other than those who refuse to look at the real numbers).

One works, one pays taxes and those whom receive hand outs pay zero. The article touches on the high end in some cases. At 7.25 one year is $13,920 minus taxes so say $12,500, not alot on money. Depending on state they can and do receive up to $30.00 an hour with the average of $17.00.

Brain dead? Just the opposite! And most of the people on this site aren't bottom dead from sitting, either. I was born in the "Great" depression, and believe me, it wasn't great! But people managed by helping one another, and doing without. We helped our neighbors because we wanted to, not because the govt. was taking it from us to give away to buy votes. Charity should be voluntary, not confiscation. It is the people who are satisfied to be permanently poor who are definitely hurting the country.

Another thing I would like to add to my previous post since we are all brain dead here as you say:

The "poor" know how to work every angle to get the most they can from everything that is free. They know exactly how long they can work before having to pay rent, then they quit. They know exactly how many times per year a chairity will pay the light bill. They know where every free giveaway is within a 50 mile radius and make sure they get there to get it. They know when to file income tax to get a big fat earned tax credit check from the IRS. They work their asses off....to get something free! So who is screwing Who?

Unfortunately for those truly in need, and justified to get entitlement payments, there are so many free seekers out there totally bankrupting the system.
These have been going on for so long that parents study how, where and when they can get another freebee. They teach their children how to use the system preventing another wave of frauds.
This is prevalent in this country while decisions are being made to add benefits to the freebee list. The Gov. has employed thousands of people to just administer this surge. Of course they want to enroll as many as they can. It justifies their jobs.
In my humble opinion it robs people of any interest in getting an education, no incentive to get a job and learn any semblance of a work ethic and certainly no job skills to sustain life or family with.
I am tired of hearing that the Social Security., Medicare and other retirement systems I paid into for over 50 years are free entitlements. We, of that generation, paid to support those in need as we built our own benefits for the future by working hard, saving what we could and being proud of it.
I still believe if the funds that were supposed to be dedicated to these systems were to be left alone by the Gov.,(using it for other purposes),auditing every recipient for justification, getting rid of invalid cases,and
drug testing every case before issuing any benefits, the system would sustain itself even in this bad economy.
I owned a construction business for over 20 years and have seen it all. People wouldn't come back to work because they were making more on unemployment, not being taxed, than they took home after taxes while working. Asking for time off because they would make too much to keep their food stamps, Quit within 30 days so the State couldn't catch up with them, and a whole array of other instances. I called several times about these abuses and was told it would be checked out without ever happening.
Sorry for the rant, as you can tell this is one of my pet issues.
