Anti-Sportsmen Legislation Awaiting Vote in California

OutdoorHub Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation +

Congressional Sportsmen's Foundation

In June, the California Assembly’s Public Safety Committee voted to pass SB 53, anti-sportsman legislation that would establish a new government-run permitting system to regulate the purchase and sale of ammunition in the state. Now, SB 53 has moved to the Assembly Floor where it could be called up for a vote at any time.

If passed, SB 53 would require virtually anyone wishing to obtain ammo used for any purpose, even hunting and target shooting, to undergo a background check and obtain approval from the State of California. SB 53 would create a state-run database of individuals approved to purchase ammunition and authorize the California Department of Justice to create an ammunition purchase permit program requiring law abiding citizens to register and pay a fee every two years, simply for acquiring common items like shotgun shells or rifle ammo. Furthermore, SB 53 would harm small businesses and limit consumer choice by banning mail-order and internet ammunition transactions in California.

Wildlife could also suffer unintended consequences if SB 53 is signed into law. By unnecessarily making it more difficult and expensive for California’s sportsmen and women to enjoy hunting and recreational shooting, SB 53 represents a direct threat to the American System of Conservation Funding. As a component of this system, revenue generated from dedicated taxes on ammunition is used to support state wildlife conservation agencies such as the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. In addition to interfering with access to and continuation of our outdoor traditions, SB 53 could ultimately result in less funding for the management of the Golden State’s public wildlife resources.

To voice your opposition to SB 53, please contact your representatives in Sacramento and tell them that you oppose this effort to restrict law abiding citizens’ access to ammunition.

If you Californians need ammo, come to Texas and shop at our gun shows. Or contact me on this forum and I'll arrange to send you what you need via Fedex or UPS, for a nominal fee.

It's not against California law to import your ordinance.

California is simple looking for another way to tax the citizen, no wonder so many companies have left there. For me, anything I buy, the price has to be much less or I go with the other vendor in a different state.

We tightly regulate automobiles in this nation because if they are used improperly the results are lethal. Same should go for arms and ordinance. It's what all the other major industrialized democracies do. It's time our gun fatality rate looked more like the U.K.'s and less like the countries of Central America. Because Calif. is such a bellweather state, passage of this bill bodes well for gun safety in the other states.

Kudos to the California legislature. Hopefully Gov. Brown will sign it quickly.

The residents of the left coast are usually first adapters to new trends, usually followed by the northeast and upper midwest. It usually takes a few decades for progressive legislation to make its way to the south and the western mountain states.

Time to get the ball rolling, especially during the last two years of President Obama's second term.

A company from California moved to Texas and two things happen when they moved. They have been here three years now and have provided 400 jobs here in Texas. For one, when the company moved, it left the Union in California and second, there new building was half the price and their Taxes were half the cost, the big surprise was, that productivity went up by 40% and now the company is enjoying a 50% more profit. You will never guess what the company did next. They gave all employees $1,500.00 check for a job well done and then they increase their pay and benefits, the president of the company said, this would have Never happen in California.

Hey why not go all the way. When you take away the machine guns, grenade launchers, bazookas, and shoulder launched surface to air missiles only the criminals will have those types of weapons.

How far you want to take this worthless NRA type argument? Backyard nuclear missiles???

You know what would keep your family the safest? If your wife divorced you and sent you to live in a one room bachelor apt. with a hot plate. I have a nephew (by marriage) who is a cranky nasty gun goober. We are all rooting for the divorce and hot plate scenario.

No one wants to talk to our "Rambo wannabe" at family gatherings and he is studiously avoided or else we engage him in trivial "how's the weather" kind of conversations so as to not set this lovely creature off. My wife, unfortunately, has one of these types of cranky gun goobers as well, on her side of the family. We only see him every ten years.

Boy are THEY lucky they don't have to put up with you any more often than that!! I know, your concept of misuse of ammo is to actually put it in a gun and murder a poor innocent defenseless target
