I do think she overreacted and should have shown some compassion and let the dog be adopted. Maybe a loving home could have turned the dog around.
One of my father's friends bought a hunting dog and had it shipped from Texas to NYS. At the beginning of hunting season they took him out and when they fired a gun at some game, the dog ran back to the car. The gun shy dog remained with the family because the kids bonded with the dog,never to hunt again.

Its not compassionate to let a dangerous dog go to someone else. That is irresponsible. There are plenty of dogs that aren’t dangerous that need good homes
