tbutkovich, I agree that the cost of nursing homes is ridiculous, that is why I have an insurance policy that will cover the cost, in case my wife and/or I need one some day. I advise people to check out the cost of such policies. I was shocked that these policies go up in cost as people get older, even though they took out these policies long before. The salesmen never told me about that when I purchased the policy. Check out several companies before buying one. In any case, helping out students with the high cost of college loans is another thing entirely. We in this country have the highest cost of higher education than any other country. If we don't help out these kids with college costs, they will not be able to go to college. If that happens, where will we get our teachers, social workers, and other important helping professions from? As a former teacher, I knew plenty of teachers that left the profession because they just couldn't make a living due to the high cost of these loans. In some states like my own, substitute teachers no longer need a college degree to get a job. It's just plain crazy. Only wealthy people will be able to become teachers. Unfortunately not enough of them want these helping professions, and the lower income folks won't be able to afford it. Another problem with not helping lower income students is that the country is much better off with an educated citizenry.

Well said. I was fortunate to pay off what loans I did have for my BA and so far I haven't had to take a loan for my current MA Program in Secondary Ed. I do understand that the interest rates of these lenders are ridiculous. WHich mean many can't make a living with these loan payments with these exorbitant interest rates. These are not graduates with worthless degrees but teachers, nurses and social workers. Who are struggling to make a living.
