The Rail Splitter did nothing to stop Sherman's Rape of the Confederacy nor Sheridan's Rape of The Shenandoah Valley. It took decades for the South to recover and some of the economic effects lasted into the 1950s.

His White House refused to even see Jefferson Davis' delegation to head off the war. He closed down scores of newspapers that supported Confederacy's right to secede. That right was never settled in court and, for whatever it's worth, the Confederacy never surrendered.

Thank you, C-L. In my many years on this forum, I have often been kept at bay by recollecting a quote by Dwight D. Eisenhower - "I despise people who go to the gutter on either right or the left and hurl rocks at those in the center." ...or, IMO, those who simply have opposing views.
