Good idea. I don't have to answer my phone on my off, or on duty time. They don't pay my phone bill. Matter of fact, I have a couple of managers blocked from my phone, and they can't do a thing.

Truthfully, it depends on one’s manager.

The other issue revolves around work from home individuals. If you work from home on the East Coast yet you support people on the West Coast there is that time difference. Even more interesting is live in the US yet deal with Europe. **been there**

One can disconnect anytime they want. It's called quitting.

Are these work from home people required to use their personal devices, and told that they are "on call" during their personal time?
And, how are they compensated for taking calls on personal time? I'm curious.

It depends if they are an employee or contractor-1099 employee.

Contractors pretty much set their compensation and determine if that compensation is worth some interruption to personal time. If you contract with a decent group, many of those parameters are set at the beginning. It can depend on the person causing the interruption. One Sunday evening I checked voicemail to hear near hysteria of please call me at once. As the person was normally very very calm and even keel, I returned the call. Yes, the call was very valid.

If a contractor has the right “friends”, you can get information from those “friends”, who have previously had contracts with a group. With that information, you can accept or decline.

If you still do contracting, avoid SAIC! I made that mistake…once was enough!

It looks like Lily answered that question.

The reason my Europe contracts were not a big personal time interruption was I am an insomniac. There were times setting up a call in the EARLY (2-4AM) was not an issue.

It, also, depends on what your function is. As mine is usually a lot of response writing, it does not require a lot of calls.

I assume for more than entry level jobs, your requirements for after "after-hours" calls from work were explained to you when you hired on. Many companies expect you to be available for emergencies...or in some cases it's even a built-in requirement. However, if the company is taking advantage...options, I imagine would differ between employers. Sadly, what usually happens is...you end up putting up with it/quit/move on

It would depend on the job requirements and job description.

I can see that. I work in a completely different environment, and was ignorant about things like this for a while until I learned. I can't be bullied, or forced to use my personal device, on, or off the clock.
New, power hungry managers are the worst, and dumbest.
We have a union contract, and good reps where I am.
If you're a contractor, and know you might have to handle something, I can see that. I punch a clock.

As she said, there is a kind of contractor underground where information on various entities is shared. I just told her to avoid SAIC if she is still doing any contract work. It is not only information about a company but project managers with a company. There is one group I have worked with but one project manager there that there is not enough money to have me work a contract with her. Her reputation precedes her.

The simple fact that originated in 'The Land of Fruits & Nuts" qualifies it as Stupid. Why legislators think a bill on this subject falls in their bailiwick is hallucinatory.

How would that work with health care employees or MDs who may need to be "on call" and come into the hospital during a public emergency after their shift ended?
