Peg,

The IRS has plenty of staff and money. They are simply a poorly run DC swamp bureaucracy.

During the Trump years, the IRS staff was cut to 1958 levels. With papers piled on any available space, including the tables in the cafeteria, the staff levels were grossly nadequate, causing the IRS to not collect at least a half billion dollars a year.

The mistake is not cutting to zero.

They would have plenty of money if they had not wasted $ millions during the Lois Lerner affair.

" On June 13, 2014 (Friday the 13th!), the IRS first says it lost Ms. Lerner’s emails from 2009 to 2011. The IRS says hard drives and backups are destroyed, for 6 other IRS employees’ too. The IRS spent $10 million trying to recover them. "

"On June 20, 2013, the IRS paid $70 million in bonuses. Ms. Lerner receives $42,000; former Commissioner Miller receives $100,000. "

Today I received a letter, two copies in fact. It demands me to send to them various documents supporting my witholding on line 25d of form 1040SR. W-2, W-2G, 1099-R. I pay a tax preparer to file electronically. I have never ever had this type of request before when filing electronically. I called my preparer and have an appointment to fix this mess. My preparer tells me this is not a big deal, and she will fax them the paperwork they require once I bring the letter to her.

What is getting me angry is that in the letter the good folks at the IRS state that once they receive the documents they demand, it will be another 6 to 8 weeks until they send me my refund. I should have already gotten my freaking refund by now. So is this a tactic by the IRS to delay paying me the money they owe me ? If this was the other way around, I suspect that I would be subject to interest and hefty penalties.[/quote

Recently we filed our income taxes in March and didn't get our refund until Sept. Because Trump cut their budget, the IRS had piles of papers on every available space in headquarters. It's a bit better now.
Why are you in such a hurry for the money??
You will get it.

An IRS Revenue Agent's yearly pay in the United States is approximately $66,956 X 87,000.
$5,825,172,000.
Plus an office and equipment.

Are you sure that salary isn't higher? That sounds low for a federal government job.

Because I have turned into a money grubbing old geezer. I have a wife who likes to spend money and under Biden what little comes in doesn't go far. The cost of living raises from Social Security do not keep up with inflation, and my two small pensions are locked in and lose value every day of Joflation. Before I retired I could wait for my tax refunds, now not so much.

Again, I wish I could screw with the IRS like they are screwing with me. Besides with the rise in interest rates, they are making decent money by holding onto MY MONEY an extra couple of months.

Perhaps it is a coincidence, but I never had this type of problem when Trump was President.

It is not your fault. This is the new IRS requirement beginning 2023.

The Employer, or the company who issued the 1099, W-2, or other tax documents, must send them to the IRS by Jan 31, 2024.

The IRS then records them based on the SS number on those documents. The IRS records all sources of your income W-2, 1099, or other sources and retirement income issued on your behalf. They also record if there were taxes withheld, and
on those income.

Your tax return prepared by the Tax Preparer must reconcile with the IRS records.

The preparer must ensure that all income and taxes withheld on those documents must reconcile with the IRS records on file.

The IRS must have all those figures already, if they were received by Jan 31, 2024. But to make sure, please ask your Tax Preparer to send those copies.

Very important. Tax Preparer must ensure that total figures on those documents must reconcile with the figures on your tax return for faster results. Please always keep copies of those documents.

Good luck!

That's what Joe Biden does to add more voters. They hire those with CRT, WOKE, or DEI. What happens, these are hired not by MERIT system, therefore not qualified to handle the jobs. Results, they make more problems instead of performing.
More money spent and more problems created by dummies.
The stupid Bidenomics of Joe Biden!

No they need their staff to be cut. They waste time and money going after Biden's political enemies. I wouldn't doubt that because of my frequent anti Biden outbursts, suddenly there are problems with my routine paperwork. I bet if I change my registration to Democrat, and I begin praising Uncle Joe, magically my problems melt away and my money suddenly shows up. I just betcha.

IMHO Biden's enemies are the people making $400,000 plus per year.

Why? 400,000 is chicken feed in bidens economy. You certainly could not retire on that amount.
