And you must be in a benevolent mood if you are chatting with the likes of me.

[quote=son of witless]Today I received a letter, two copies in fact. It demands me to send to them various documents supporting my witholding on line 25d of form 1040SR. W-2, W-2G, 1099-R. I pay a tax preparer to file electronically. I have never ever had this type of request before when filing electronically. I called my preparer and have an appointment to fix this mess. My preparer tells me this is not a big deal, and she will fax them the paperwork they require once I bring the letter to her.

What is getting me angry is that in the letter the good folks at the IRS state that once they receive the documents they demand, it will be another 6 to 8 weeks until they send me my refund. I should have already gotten my freaking refund by now. So is this a tactic by the IRS to delay paying me the money they owe me ? If this was the other way around, I suspect that I would be subject to interest and hefty penalties.[/quote

Recently we filed our income taxes in March and didn't get our refund until Sept. Because Trump cut their budget, the IRS had piles of papers on every available space in headquarters. It's a bit better now.

Do you blame Trump for your shitty life also? You blame him for everything else.

Contrary to your tax guy…. It’s always a big deal when dealing with them.

It’s the same with the IRS. All you can do is try and minimize your losses.

I have the paperwork they want. I am not up on how this crap works. I don't know if when returns are filed electronically whether the " W-2, W-2G, 1099-R " copies go or not. I guess they don't. I think it has to do mostly with withholding on Social Security. Apparently SS and IRS folks do not like to speak to each other.

The thing is, my return is essentially the same as last year. I find it sickly amusing that my timely receipt of my money will depend on the cutting edge technology of my tax preparers fax machine. Otherwise if I mail the documents my fate is in the hands of the US Postal Service. I have the utmost confidence in them since twice they lost my check to my Electricity Provider, and almost got my power cut off for non payment.

Oh wait, republicans are against that.

No they need their staff to be cut. They waste time and money going after Biden's political enemies. I wouldn't doubt that because of my frequent anti Biden outbursts, suddenly there are problems with my routine paperwork. I bet if I change my registration to Democrat, and I begin praising Uncle Joe, magically my problems melt away and my money suddenly shows up. I just betcha.

Peg,

The IRS has plenty of staff and money. They are simply a poorly run DC swamp bureaucracy.

I'd always filed my own returns until I bought a house. My tax guy is a former IRS employee and I usually get my return within a week from filing.

A better solution would be to abolish the IRS and replace it with one of the many other tax proposals that have been put forward over the last 40 years. I believe almost all the proposals eliminate the entire tax code and replace it with something that only covers a few pages and has no loopholes. The federal tax code is 6871 pages, when tax regulations and tax guidelines from the IRS are included it is about 75,000 pages.

Since I retired, my income went from wages to SS, pensions, and investments. I did not handle the transition very well. I had them take out 10 % withholding and last year got back quite a bit. This year also a lot. That is if my masters at the IRS ever give it to me. I get your point, but I always fear owing.

One of my relatives this year got a very nasty surprise because one of her various employers did not take enough money out. Instead of a large refund, which she already committed to spend, she ended up owing a large sum.
