So do we shut down congress? How would new legislation be presented that address issues? Perhaps thru direct referendums. (vote of all adults over 18?) Reduce rep in the House to the same number for each State and territory regardless of population like the senate? These questions were posed by students of mine often over my entire teaching career. The consensus was usually we need a 2 house congress as the founders laid out. Should we move away from this idea?

Nope. It's much simpler than what most envision. Look to the Constitution. The problem is the political animals in the government. The Founders never envisioned congress people becoming permanently entrenched in D.C.. To straighten this mess out Congress people would have to lead by example. Heaven forbid. For instance, we all know that spending must be cut and entitlements at least looked at. So if the congress critters want the average American Citizen to take some pain, they should lead by example. Cut their staffs by 2/3's. Work more than six months a year. No more huge spending/pork bills. You want pork in something to take home to your constituents, submit a transparent bill. Access the same healthcare as the rest of us, or if you think the V.A.'s that damn good access that. No more pensions. 401K's like most of America.
No more counting of non-citizens for the census. This screws over the average American citizen; both in representation and Federal benefits to their district. IMO the system works damn well if it wasn't for the politicians.

What an outstanding idea. Now, let me explain my reasoning.

With technology, Congress does not need to be in DC daily. Truthfully, they want to be in DC. It is very easy to avoid answering to your constituents if you are rarely in your district or state/Commonwealth. It is much easier to hobnob with lobbyist if you are right up the road from their offices.

They could spend one month, per quarter, in DC working from 8:00AM till 5:00PM like real workers do.

While home, they should hold a monthly townhall. None of my elected officials have held a townhall in, minimally, six years.

As an aside, check out the price of dinner at The Palm in DC. On any given evening you can find a multitude of elected officials having dinner there. I will not bother with the other two favorites.

I notice no one is paying attention to this. No surprise there.

I am gobsmacked at the prices at that restaurant. Appetizers $20, soup/salad $18-20, pasta $30-40, beef $70-90.

Lily, I have been using quotes since I joined OPP over eleven years ago. Whenever an opportunity arises to use a pertinent quote, I'll continue to use 'em.

Sanctimonious Nah, just another plain speaking, hard-nosed Texan.

I believe that the new legislation should be aware of how bad it is right now. I believe in the two house Congress, but you can see they have no plans to work together on anything. The dem’s are the worse, of the two though.
They are supposed to work for the people, not on their own interests. Why do we spend money on such
nonsensical things, like the shrimp on a treadmill, money on mating calls of whales, etc, just stupid things that take our tax dollars. It tells me they aren’t using our Tx dollars for things that matter. I just think if given the chance, we could do better.

I agree with you JSmitty . The Democrat party has absolutely moved too far to the left just like the GOP has moved too far to the right. I was a Republican until 1992 when I saw that the GOP had moved too far from the middle. The problem is what can we do to find politicians who will serve us and not special interests. Yes I also see a need for a 2 house legislature. We need a new opposition party that is NOT left but is MOR fiscal conservative supporting a smaller federal gov't. But also one that understands there are social problems that need to be addressed at the federal level when the states can't or won't do it. We do need to do better absolutely. How do we do this is the question.

It is not the job of the federal government to handle social problems. The elected officials, for decades, continue to move further and further and further away from the defined duties, as stated in the Constitution.

You big government loons think one size fits all. What works in one place doesn’t work in another. It’s called states rights!
