Tucker wasn't trying to match wits with Putin. He simply asked a few questions and allowed Putin to answer. Simple as that. There was some back and forth but nothing argumentative. Journalists don't argue.

As it turned out, most of the time Putin lectured Tucker about fake Russian history and why Ukraine has no right to exist as a separate country.
