Man. Everyone on this thread has great ideas for these illegal invaders with the exception of PEGW. How can she think this should be our responsibility? Deport the "migrants " and close the border . I've had those. They are usually made in China. One was a bolt cutter that the handles bent when I cut wire, another was a set of wood rasps where the teeth came off whenever I used them on 2x4s. Single use and disposable.

My stepfather was a blacksmith and when I showed him how the teeth came off, he was sure he could heat treat the undamaged rasps. However, when he tried they merely became black and were no better. He gave them to a chemist at the steel company he worked at to analyze. Apparently the sulfur content in the steel was extremely high. It seems that was common in the small furnaces of China in the 1970's.

As far as Japanese products I concur. In the 1960s everyone made fun of Made in Japan. By the early 70s that was changing. My father was a Philadelphia cop and one of his cop friends bought a Toyota in 1970. It was the smallest car I had ever seen. It was funny to see this huge guy pop out of this tiny car. A few years later during the first gasoline crisis those tiny cars became valuable.

American car companies tried to produce small fuel efficient cars like the vega which were total junk. Those first tiny Japanese cars ended up being recognized as quality. It seemed afterward most Japanese made stuff was better than American. My only real knock on Japanese cars of the 1970s is Subaru. My first non used car was a 1979 Subaru Brat. I was quite proud and excited about getting what I thought was a quality inexpensive 4 wheel drive.

After having several cars rust out from under me during the 1970s I was determined that my first new car would not rust and I spent an extra $ 600 to have the dealer rust proof it. That was a lot of money to me back then. Ten years later it did rust out and my lifetime warranty was worth $ 600 which was the blue book value of the car.

In the 1960s we had dime stores, where most everything was made in Japan.

Now we have dollar stores, and the same crap is made in China.

The only real difference is that Japan was then our Ally, China damn sure isn't.
