That's a great story!
We never had a problem with animals getting into our food, but we knew to keep our stuff locked up and raccoon proofed. We saw a lot of wildlife, everything from deer to feral hogs to various predators (never saw a bear, though), but the only trouble we ever had was the occasional kid who did not LISTEN or HEED our warnings about fire ants, and who would sneak snacks into his tent. Nothing compares to waking up covered in fire ants in the middle of the night.
Some people have to learn the hard way. I guess all of us do, from time to time.
That's a great story! br We never had a problem ... (show quote)

I absolutely hate fire ants! I've seen first hand what they did to a cow in Louisiana. I thought the high mud tube were terminate mounds. My friend explained that since that region was flooded quite often the ants adapted. Didn't take long before that cow died. Just one bite and my foot swelled up. The worst part is you can't kill them by normal means. My friend would pour gas on their nest wait awhile for it to soak into the grass, step back and light a match. Poof! Instant bonfire...good grief!

How about sending the tenderfoots out to other scout camps during summer camp for a (left handed smoke shifter) or a (square knot checker) as JASM I did that many times! I continued that in the Corps, (5 gallons of prop wash) (50 feet of flight line) on the carrier (pads for the overhead buffer) and (a gallon of bulk head remover)! Thanks for the memories, BTW 805-642-7833 our phone # Ventura, Ca 1960

I no longer live in California , i moved to Kentucky, however I do thank you for the invite. I was on troop 25 as the Assistant Scout Master out of the long Beach council. I spent 13 summers at scout camp. We did try the one in Idlewild but we didn't enjoy it as much. For our weekend adventure we went all over. We went North as far as Jalama Beach by Vandenberg AFB and Down into San Diago..personally I wanted to take them to the Eastern Sierras and go fishing. We didn't have the funds for such an adventure. I was invited for another scout Troup outing taking 65 scouts down the Owen's River in Canos. They needed someone who knew the river and would serve as a lifesaver with first aid experience. I've been down that river quite a number of times. We stayed at Brownstown camp ground. Everyone went home wirh lots of great stories to talk about. I would go twice a year with my friends to fish for trout and take the canos to fish owens river as well.. It's absolutely beautiful! Best trout I caught was at gull lake. I even made the papers. My trout was a rainbow and weighed 5lbs 10 Oz. They have opening season prize giveaways. I got a hat..LOL If some guy hadn't caught his fish that weighed more than mine I would have had some cash in my pocket! Oh well. I've even been ice fishing at little Virginia lake and caught myself my first bookie. Weighed 2lbs and if you know they don't get much bigger. Those fish have some beautiful coloring and very tasty!

My own personal musings............

Due to my isolation, I finished three books yesterday. And believe me, that’s a lot of coloring.

What did our parents do to kill boredom before the internet? I asked my 26 brothers and sisters, and they didn’t know either.

I tried donating blood today…NEVER AGAIN! Too many stupid questions: Who’s blood is it? Where did you get it from? Why is it in a bucket?

Struggling to get your wife’s attention? Just sit down and look comfortable.

Just sold my homing pigeon on eBay for the 22nd time.

I grew up with Bob Hope, Steve Jobs, and Johnny Cash. Now there’s no jobs, no cash, and no hope. Please don’t let anything happen to Kevin Bacon.

Shout-out to everyone who can still remember their childhood phone number but can’t remember the password they created yesterday. You are my people.

Think you’re old and you will be old. Think you are young, and you will be delusional.

I still have vivid memories of the first time I encountered them.
But they are a fact of life in south Texas, and have been for thirty years now. Like hurricanes, you take precautions and stay aware. But they have been a big problem for wildlife, especially for newborns.

Not very popular with the younger generations these days..

Having 3 boys is an adventure! Trying to keep them out of trouble even more difficult. Best way was to keep them active and finding ways to build good character. Seemed scouting was one way. They all started when they reached the age to join the tigers. Got them through scouting until they found the joys of girls, High school Band and marching band took up quite a bit of their time and effort. I had one son in orchestra along with everything else. There were choices to make and Scouts was the first to be abandoned. The youngest came the closest to Eagle Scout. He missed out when time ran out, which was sad because he really did try hard. I enjoyed being part of scouting I continued even after the boys reached 18. But not for long, we moved and it became to much to attend. Yes Canuckus i agree, Once the girls were able to attend, scouting just wasn't the same. Really wish that wouldn't have happened. The girlscouts should have had a program that provided for the girls who were more aggressive.

Dad moved us around, , , , , a lot. I remember most of my childhood phone numbers and addresses, my parents drilled them into my little head, so I use them for pass codes that are short. Anything else I must write down because I will never remember them.

Before I joined the Navy I worked at "Farmall Works" in the foundry in Rock Island, Ill. My clock # was 29855. One of the first things we were to remember in boot camp was our service number. The Co Commander hollered my name and I replied 29855 Sir.

I know they made it to California. So far I haven't seen them in Kentucky yet, but I'm sure they will show up eventually. The wild boar have shown up. My neighbor shot one last week. I keep waiting to see if I'll be invited for boar dinner.

Be cautious! Their meat is pretty bad unless prepared just right.
I worked with a couple of brothers who were lifelong outdoorsmen. In fact, both of them retired and started a hunting/fishing guide service.
Any time our company had a party or celebration the district manager would let Marvin and Ed know, and they would shoot 2 or 3 of the boars, and BBQ them up for the shindig. We averaged about 65 employees during the 80s and 90s. With spouses and kids, a company celebration could count on at least 200 folks attending. We usually had three or four of these parties per year. All day Saturday events, with volleyball, horseshoes, washer toss, and all kinds of things for the kids. Each family would bring potluck sides to go along with the BBQ pork and the German potatoes another employee specialized in cooking. Ed and Marvin would get Friday off in order to process the boars and start the cooking. I have no idea WHAT those two did to the meat, but it was as tender and tasty as the best brisket in the state!
I have had good boar meat from other people, but more often than not it is tough and gamy. You really have to know what you are doing, and I certainly do not. My experience is that most people don't know the secret, whatever it is. Maybe some of our OPP brothers and sisters have an idea.
Any one out there know?

Numbers from my childhood stick in my head. The names of people I met yesterday are gone. Some of the stories from years ago I get twisted. That is my inner Joe Biden. I could be President. I couldn't do worse than him.

Thanks Randy, I'll keep that in mind. The neighbors that baged that boar just happen to be Redneck Hibillys. They've been at this sort of stuff all their lives. But I'll ask to see if they ever cooked Boar before. Mind you that's if I get an invite.
