GUNS

Today I asked myself why do I like guns? Not just rifles but also handguns. Why do I own so many? Here are my answers:

Self-defense
As a 92-year-old I cannot respond to physical threats in kind, I need equalizers, and that means handguns placed nearby me within reach wherever I am in the house.
Over two million people per year have relied on a weapon to thwart a grave threat to their existence according to police reports. So, that there is a threat is well-established, granted that the odds that I will face such a threat are rather low. I am prepared however!

Hunting
For many years I was a fan of hunting small game, but many of my acquaintances were big game hunters that also served to control excess population in various areas.
In the north, including Alaska, and in our mountains, hunting big game is done to place food on the table for the year, which is a life-sustaining necessity. Hunting to reduce the population of predators on ranch lands and in swamp areas is yet another necessity.

Sport
Shooting is a national sport enjoyed by millions. In my high school days, I was on the rifle team, and did quite well at the sport.

Military
In just about every generation, we have had
to mount a significant military effort. Young men that have grown up shooting for sport or for hunting purposes provide a welcome capability in our services, since the more you practice accurate shooting the better you get, and it takes thousands of rounds to achieve a superior capability.

Love of Precision Mechanisms
Many people have a great appreciation for the sheer beauty of a well-made weapon, how it looks, how it feels to the grasp, how well its action works, how accurate it shoots, and what its hitting power is, all contribute to the admiration of a weapon. Then too, there is the admiration of historical weapons and how well they fared.

Thus, I am a proud gun owner and minor collector, and with my mental outlook and training, I practice safety always, and I most certainly hope that I never have to use my weapons in self-defense.

Nice post!

My wife has always chided me for my obsession for “gadgets”…..guns being the foremost.

I’ve done a lot of “bird hunting”, but, the real interest is in collecting, shooting and maintaining the firearms.

I'm a gun owner, but I rarely use a sidearm, pistol etc. I like the accuracy of bolt action rifles.
