Slavery ended with 13th amendment 1865 (158 years ago). But then virtually reinstated in every respect but the name by Jim Crow laws as soon as reconstruction ended in 1877. Jim Crow abused black American citizens for 90 years and did not stop with the civil rights act 1968. A lot of push back against 1st class citizenship for blacks in my lifetime.
So there are real black people alive today that were harmed by government action in real economic ways that deserve reparations. I do not think they will get it because we like to ignore our real history of mistreatment of blacks in the south. It is not a silly thing if phrased as reparations for Jim Crow oppression and economic harm.
I live in Cobb county Georgia for most of my adult life. I know many Republicans and a great many are not white racists.
I also know a substantial number of white racists and they are all republicans.
Back when the south effectively only had one political party, the Democratic Party. The real election was the Democratic Party primary. The Republican might get 20% in the general election. The Republican Party did not make inroads until the Southern strategy of embracing the disaffected pro-segregation democrats that were unhappy about civil right laws passed by LBJ administration. Getting them to flip party shifted the south to Red.
