I love the Star Trek universe...
Those brutal, dark skinned Clingons...
The emotionless, logical, imperial Romulans... (With their tamer cousins the Vulcans who are our allies)
Those greedy, lying Ferengi with their giant ears...
And those non individual, mindless Borg who want all life to embrace their ideology...
Let's not forget the Cardassian colonizers...
Such a fascinating mix of aliens... I've always wondered where they got the ideas for them

I have read in the Original Series The Klingons were modeled on the Russians/Communists. The Romulans based on an Imperial Rome that never fell. Later TNG brought in the Collective Borg, AI /human hybrids. My favorite ST Series DS9 writers created the Bajorans who were modeled on the Jews and early Christians I have read. Expanded the Ferengi major capitalists in a world with out currency. The Cardassians are also imperialists like all the 19thc colonial powers. Then we can't forget the stormtroopers/Waffen SS based JemHadar and their controllers the Vorta all minions of the Changelings. Finally we can't forget "Q" the Omnipotent, Odin, god and Loki All in one. I have always believed that SciFi writers were the most inventive of all writers.

What did you guys think of the Expanse series of books? I have not been real impressed with the TV series, but I really enjoyed reading the books.

Peter Hamilton is, in my opinion as a life long sci fi addict, among the very best sci fi writers ever...if not the very best.
The Night's Dawn series was incredible.
But I chose to stop reading his books because of his addiction to describing graphic sex scenes and situations.
Such explicit sexual writing belongs in trash novels, and for me, ruined his incredible story lines.

I agree...Love his stuff...
I can't recall too.many graphic sex scenes... But I grew up reading Gor so I might be desensitized to them
Have you read "The Three Bodies Problem"??
First internationally recognized sci-fi novel written by a Chinese author... Even made a movie about it...
No, I haven't, but I'll find a copy or Kindle and give it a shot.
i tend to gravitate to the classical writers of sci fi.....Heinlein, Asimov, Anderson, etc. The team up of Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle have replaced Heinlein as my favorite writer(s) of all time, and the last decade my reading time has mostly gone to rereading old favorites.
But I DO enjoy new stuff on occasion, so I will look for THE THREE BODIES PROBLEM.
Thanks very much for the suggestion. Are there any other authors or specific novels you would recommend?
