There is a place that has been around a long time for intellectual enrichment it is called a library. You don't have to necessarily travel to the library. You can use your computer to get E-books free of charge from the library. If you can't find the title you want at the local library the library can query other libraries in the US. I have used this broadened search on queries that might be peculiar to my culture and heritage in the Ozarks.
Matthew 7:7
From the King James translation of Matthew 7:7: "Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you."

Ridge Runner, If we follow your logic, We ought to do away with classroom education, and just let the students into a library. African American students need to learn about their past. It gives folks a real sense of pride in their identity. That identity was taken from them in the 1600s when so many became slaves, and had their identity taken from them. I truly believe that all kids need another year of high school social studies, as well as other subjects. It could be taken in the summer. Perhaps a choice of courses including African American history. The more you learn about history, government, and geography , the better.

Actually, if kids were educated properly, there would not be a need for classroom education. Kids should be taught to teach themselves using the vast amount of materials available to them. When I taught, my philosophy was this, if I could get them to the point where they no longer needed me, I would have accomplished my goal. Teach them to fish, don't just give them fish.

They are taught about their identity - they are Americans.
Slavery is taught in history class. As is the 'Irish Migration' and the Chinese brought to America to work the railroads., as well as all the other various ethnic groups in our country.
You are simply promoting the 'progressive' victim mindset.

One has to know how to read to use the library. Years ago I worked for a non-profit and we hired college students for summer work. I was tasked one day to assist with the interviews and my first candidate was a young black man. The first thing I noticed was some misspelled words on his application then I asked what his major was in college and he replied "the history of the drum" to which I suggested he can save a lot of money by leaving college and going to the library. I'm guessing that this was a case of my tax dollars at work. And to think they also had to pay someone to teach this class.

This is why colleges were ranked according to the number of volumes in their libraries.

They need the basics, the three R's.
The history of the African American is being rewritten. Check out 1619, a two series documentary on this subject. It claims the United States of America began in 1619, the year the first black slaves were brought to America. It is viewed through the prism of racism, and the white man is the perpetrator of all that ails the black community. This is also being incorporated into our schools as Social Studies.
Please note that broad generalizations meant to demean and humuliate a community of people based upon race or religion is offensive. The vast majority of black people are hard working, law abiding people. MSM portrays a different image with so much coverage of crimes committed by the few. This done to divide and conquer. Just as 1619 is attempting to do. Do not fall into this misguided trap and swallow blindly everything MSM feeds you, not even Fox or Newsmax. Be objective, questioning, and forever curious.

Yet, progressives desperately wish to ignore the fact it was
Africans who sold their fellow Africans into slavery. I know it very difficult for your ilk to understand; however, one cannot/should not place historical events in context of current societal values. Unfortunately, you probably, as a history teacher, failed abysmally to understand that.

On the contrary I know that most blacks were captured by other black tribesmen who co-operated with many Europeans and Arabs in providing slaves. I also do understand that one can't or should not place historical events in conditions of current society mores. Yes at times it did propose challenges to the teaching of history.

I agree with you salt. We should require another year of social studies in HS to include civics and government.
