Algebra struggles

Officials in Kansas are considering doing away with the requirement that college students take algebra because too many are failing it, which cuts into graduation rates.

The immediate reaction is to bemoan how dumbed-down college has become, and you wouldn’t be wrong (“I’ll have a large latte, gender studies major.”) But proponents of the change argue that algebra isn’t necessary for most professions and should only be required if you’re going on to study calculus. And I’ll admit that I haven’t had much call for algebra since getting out of school.

But even if you don’t remember all the formulas, it does instill in students some mental discipline and basic understanding of math, which would be useful in all professions, especially politics, where it’s sorely lacking. Surely, there must be some middle ground between forcing everyone to study algebra and turning out college students who think that saying 2 plus 2 equals 4 is racist oppression.

When I was in high school, Algebra was a required course for 14 year old freshmen. You could not graduate without it. I read that the average high school senior today graduates with what would have been considered a mediocre 6th or 7th grade education when I was in high school. I think that estimate was a little too charitable.

While I was attending college in the early 80’s, the college made algebra a required class; taught by the math department. Initially they had so many failures that they changed it to 2 different classes: ‘algebra for math majors’ and ‘algebra for non-math majors’.

The same thing happened with statistics as well.

Forty years after high school graduation, I brushed up on my algebra skills for three months at our community college in a self-paced online course. I then passed a regular college entrance exam and took classes. Of course, I took Algebra I and two, geometry, and advanced math in high school. After graduation, I took business math.

I've used geometry and algebra for building and home improvement projects.

I think business classes and accounting should be required high school courses. They are valuable skills one uses for a lifetime in business and a home setting.

=====================
Math and Science are racist subjects. Some schools in Seattle banned Math and Science from the grade schools to high schools.

Those who are great in Math, are the Whiteys and Asians are likewise called racist.
So the LIB schools use CRT and WOKE system for blacks to gain equity,

Geeeeez - idiots can’t pass Algebra? That’s jr high and high school.
Well, this tells me we MUST dissolve the Teachers unions / Federation. Fire 95 percent of teachers. Repeal / dissolve the US Department of Education. Duh, it’s unconstitutional.
And more.
