I as most Americans, was really disappointed that the negotiater were unable to free ex marine Mr Whalan. Sometimes you just have to take what you can get. Also poliical. Maybe if we lobby like they did for Brittany we can get Whalan out. Possibly trade him for an oligarch's yacht.

There was no choice.
Russia demanded a spy for a spy.
We have no spies in custody , they wanted a spy being held in Germany.
We have no jurisdiction over that .

That is not what Biden said.
He said Russia was adamant about releasing a spy without getting a spy in return.
And yes we have no spies in custody .
