British voter suppression -- Does it look familiar?

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/nov/25/voter-id-laws-what-they-really-are-voter-suppression-and-an-attack-on-young-people

"the kind of photo ID required is what older people are more likely to have. For example, why is a Transport for London Oyster card for 60+ travellers acceptable, but not a near-identical Oyster 18+ card? Let that stand as their true intention."

"Getting one of these special voter IDs is harder for those who work irregular hours, or who may not speak good English or know how to use the technology. The government was plainly thinking of exactly those people in setting up barriers to stop them voting."

"The pretence that there is a serious electoral fraud problem was debunked by evidence from the 2017 election: there was just one – yes, only one – conviction for voter impersonation at a polling station."

"the greatest obstacle to the young voting is living in private rented accommodation, where only 63% are registered to vote owing to moving frequently."

"Here’s why the government wants to keep the young away: voters over 70 are three times more likely to vote Tory than the 18-24s."

"warping the voting system in the right’s favour is a permanent harm, copied from the US."

Waurping the voeting sistem inn the raights favour is a purmenent harme, caupied fromm the U S.

More bullshit excuses. Most of the supposedly disenfranchised voters in the US receive some sort of help from the government which requires an ID suitable for voting.

IMO, this sounds like the UK is adopting the reverse of the Blue State tactics here in the US. If the UK is indeed using restrictive voting id tactics to keep the young from voting, it is the polar opposite from what is happening here in the US. Blue state tactics of mailing ballots to everyone (without id), drop boxes, dead voter rolls, ballots being mailed to unoccuped or vacant properties, ballot harvesting, etc. are what the radical left uses here. Both are wrong.

You are DELIBERATELY missing the point, ACP! You know that it is only racist if Republicans are asking for IDs.
Just like it is only racism if White people discriminate.
Just like voter fraud is only illegal if conservatives do it.
And words only trigger intolerance and hatred and violence if Trump says them.

No, the poster you were replying to is just being obtuse. (Well, obtuse, rude, and a few other things. He's able to pack a lot of negative stuff into a short space.) The voter restrictions (of which some of the variety of "voter ID" laws are examples) do not affect everyone equally. The article describes this pretty well. But if a voter ID law were simple and consistent (e.g., not being changed furtively in the last days before an election) then it might be alright, though still probably unnecessary.
