From my perspective, socialism is a wide view that generally refers the the idea of social ownership of economic means. So, while I do agree with you that many of our social programs are not "socialism" in the sense that they often use privately owned economic functions there is still a certain measure of social ownership over things like government regulation or subsidy of economic means.

Then we have entire operations such as police departments, fire departments, public schools, county hospitals and the military services that fall under the umbrella of social ownership. If that wasn't the case, populist movements like "defunding the police" would not be of any concern.

What gets me is how people have been so programmed into thinking socialism is such a bad thing to start with. Is it really so bad to suggest that the citizens have any ownership over the services they depend on?
