No President of The USA has ever been elected by the popular vote. The "people" do not elect the President, the state's do through the electoral college as outlined in the Constitution. Each state elects, or otherwise selects, it's slate of electors who are required cast their first vote according to their states instructions.
That was just one of several actions taken by our "founding fathers" to prevent the federal government from riding "rough shod" over the states, it's called states rights. Unfortunately the feds, especially the democrats, have whittled away at those rights until they are almost gone. They have been so succsesful that they are now going after our individual constitutional rights, especially in the last six months.
