In today's context that is entirely immaterial. Under British Rule the good people of Hong Kong enjoyed great personal freedoms. When China took back that city, it promised to continue those freedoms. Those Chinese promises have proven to be worthless.
It is understandable that China cannot have a major city within it's control, having residents with rights that all other Chinese are denied. If they ever take back Taiwan, it will be the same thing.
Freedom is the most dangerous virus in the World. It must be exterminated, or it will prove fatal to Russia, China, Iran, Cuba, and California.

Actually, to date, Hong Kong hasn't lost any of its freedoms... As was demonstrated in the last election...
I'm not sure what freedoms the Hongkongese enjoy that the rest of China do not... Although they are allowed to assemble in protest without first attaining a permit... And certain speech is protected...
You should visit... You might learn something about freedom... It's a term that gets bandied about a lot, but rarely is defined in any meaningful way...
