nonalien1, a very brief, off the top of my head explanation is this:
The Rapture is when Christ returns to the Earth and living Christians are lifted up to him. Dead Christians will rise again, and all will meet him in the air.
But Revelations, and a few other places in the Bible, warns us of Armageddon, the time of fire, death, and disaster. This is where there is a lot of controversy and wildly various beliefs. One major belief system holds that the Rapture will come BEFORE Armageddon, and Christians will be spared from the Tribulation. Another believes that no, Christians will be in the thick of the Tribulation. These are beliefs are referred to as Premillinalists and Postmillinalists. Lots of variation in details, depending on the church, but this is the basic conflict. The Bible is not very clear on the specifics, leaving Christians to wrangle and argue uselessly over the details. Personally, I disapprove of such arguments because no one can prove either case. I am a Panmillinialist. Whatever God does, it will all "pan" out according to His will.

Pauline Christians -- those who profess belief that the epistles aascribed to His Holy Spirit.re the Word of God -- need to take a hard look at what Christ actually taught vs what was the word of the apostles and their followers.
Jews interpreted and believed that the Messiah would come as a conquering king to vanquish the enemies of the Israelites and free them from the oppression of the Romans. Well, that, as we know did not happen. What DID happen as historical records affirm, was that a baby boy was born who had unique abilities and insights into Jewish law.
Jesus came to be known for his preaching of repentance for one's sins. Christ never spoke of Armageddon or the rapture. These are man-made doctrine.
Emmanuel Swedenborg proposed an alternative. Heaven and Hell are within YOU, depending on whether you live a life of kindness and charity or selfishness. You make your own happiness and true happiness comes from being useful and doing good -- i,e, loving your neighbor.
Swedenborg also claimed that we all have "spirit" or "soul" which is separate from the body. That is what continues into the afterlife. That, to me, makes more sense than a soul magically re-appearing at the rapture. Where has it been in the meantime? Read about Swedenborg's version of non-Pauline Christianity. See NewEarth.org and The Spiritual frontier.

I encourage everyone to explore every aspect of God that you are able to. All theories should be evaluated to whatever extent you are interested.
However.
To equate the life and death and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ as a mere "baby boy was born who had unique abilities and insights into Jewish law." is choosing a dangerously WRONG path in life. It denies the divinity of Christ, the plan of God, and the sacrifice He made for each and every one of us. Be aware that we are no more capable of understanding God's plans that a chimpanzee is capable of explaining Einstein's theory of general relativity. We only know what God provides to us, and that is sufficient. Search for the TRUTH, even when you do not fully understand it....not what makes the most 'sense' to you. So by all means, explore away. But be careful what bait you swallow, and watch out for the hook.

What I wrote is verifiable history. You incorrectly read into that sentence what you think my beliefs are. Not only are you wrong about that but you ignored everything else. I encourage you to read the links I provided if you want to find out what I actually believe and stretch your mind a little bit.

You are mistaken. I have no idea what your beliefs are, and I read nothing into your post, and made no assumptions. My intent is clearly stated and not in contradiction to what you wrote. Read. Study. Learn. Evaluate. But watch out for false prophets. History confirms Jesus lived, and not a whole lot more about His teachings, outside the Bible and a few other ancient documents. My concern with your post, since you brought up the subject, is that you seem (in my opinion) to be understating who and what Jesus is. Further, you seemed to be promoting (again, just my opinion) the idea of exploring religious choices for what you are comfortable with., rather than seeking the truth and God's plan for your life. But that is just an observation. Not a conclusion. I did not intend to step on your toes, if that is how you took my post.
