What those idiots can't seem to comprehend is that since Americans come from virtually every nation on Earth, the only cohesion we have as a nation comes from a mutual dedication to the symbols that we have erected that represent this American nation, flag, pledge, national anthem, national language and a shared view of history, the good and the bad. We share nothing but the honor of our accomplishments and the blight of our failures; every one represented by those symbols. Eliminate those and we are just a lot of unrelated people living in North America.

The concept that as members of an elected city government in America should feel the need to play up to illegal residents or members of foreign countries makes no sense. They are there to represent their voters, who are legal citizens, in doing what is in the best interests of the citizens. If they feel they need to represent illegal residents and non citizens, they should find another way to express those interests. But not against the interests of those that voted them into office.
