Firearms deter crime. They do not deter accidents. According to FBI stats, in the past 20 years, even though we have had a large increase in population, a large increase in the number of firearms in circulation, and a HUGE spike in the number of people carrying firearms, the murder rate is about half what it was 20 years ago. This is not wishful thinking, this is Federal Bureau of Investigation fact.
Also FBI fact: while handguns are most often used in the commission of a crime, they are also most often used in the prevention of one far more frequently. Long guns, rifles and shotguns, are rarely a factor. More people die every year from knives and from clubs than rifles and shotguns combined.

Little zinger for you Brian; Canada has about the same population as California. The number of murders by race should be right up your alley. If you discount the murders committed by blacks and Hispanics in California, the number of murders committed by whites, per capita, in Canada and California is almost identical. Oh, I know, that's RAAAACIIIIST!!!

It is doubtful anyone other than the robbers would have been shot.

North Carolina restaurant The Pit was robbed at gunpoint on Sunday. Normally, local crime stories like this wouldn't merit a Townhall post, but this one is different: The Pit has a "no weapons" sign displayed prominently on its door declaring the restaurant a gun-free zone, and bans patrons from carrying concealed weapons.

Authorities said just before 9 p.m. Sunday, three men wearing hoodies entered the restaurant through the back doors with pistols, and forced several staff members to lie on the floor.

The bandits assaulted two employees during the crime, but they were not seriously injured.

What groups like Everytown for Gun Safety or Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America seem to have an issue grasping is that criminals have no respect for the law by nature of being criminals. Criminals aren't going to be stopped by a "no guns allowed" sign. If somebody is going to rob or shoot up a Chipotle, for instance, they're not going to care that they cannot (or have been politely asked not to) bring a gun onto the premises. Criminals are not going to submit to background checks. They'll use straw purchases or just buy a gun from an illegal source. All these policies and laws do is make it harder for legal gun owners to protect themselves.

While I am thankful nobody was hurt, this certainly harms the narrative that "gun free" places are safe places.

I'm glad no one was hurt , ....Its not nice to discriminate against us gun lovers...Crooks could care less, signs like these just makes it easier for them to pick a target...!!!

Well Roy, there are a lot of Americans that don't agree with you. Chipotle restaurants two days ago decided that goobers armed with military assault type rifles are bad for business. Most people are not thrilled to have their coffee and scone with a Rambo wanna-be, next to them, drooling on their shoes. Chipotle would prefer the gun nuts take their business elsewhere.

Businesses that agree with them???

1. Disney theme parks
2. National Football League
3. Toys R Us
4. Chuck E. Cheese
5. Starbuck's
6. Ikea
7. Whole Foods
8. California Pizza Kitchen

The "Deliverance BBQ" chain is requiring all of its customers to wear camouflage and carry Glocks and AR-15s. Their affiliate, the "Dew-Drop In" has adopted a similar policy in the southern states.

Brian if you were down here where I Live ...you wouldn't even know who has a gun....And if I were there where you live , I would have it and you would never know it...And I would have it at all those places you listed...and so would several hundred thousand other people who are Responsible gun owners whether you agree or not...You need to get over the RAMBO mentality...Because the next life saved by a concealed carry permit might be yours.........

Have friends in the UK instead of being shot you might get knifed or beaten with a ball bag which I understand that base ball bats are now forbidden to order online in the UK !

There are many times when guns save lives. When guns allow crime victims to fight back. Only in America do guns save lives because only in America have the citizens inherited the right to bear arms.

The US has the highest rate of gun ownership in the world. For overall murders per 100,000 people, we are not even in the top ten. US murders per 100,000 overall, 4.9. Jamaica, where civilian firearms ownership is completely, totally forbidden: 40.9 per 100,000. Ten times our murder rate, just not with firearms.

I was watching tv one night and this black dude had a baseball bat in his hand... he fast walked across the street to this guy half propped up against the wall though sitting down.. and this guy with this bat.. went directly to him and beat that man to pieces... I had to stop watching it.. it was so terrible.... don't know if he killed him or not.. I just know that would be a much worse and horrible death than a single bullet in the chest... or head... so much for violence of the black man... Don't know if he was ever caught or not.. but the cameras sure caught it..

So your argument for guns is you would rather be shot than beaten. Great argument. How about not being I the wrong place at the wrong time. I've never as an adult been beaten, shot, or even punched. I have seen a few fingers sent my way.

You are fortunate. I, too floated in the ignorance of bliss until I was shot at while on my own property, and took some licks in an unsuccessful robbery attempt.

Perhaps I should not have been on my own land at the time. Perhaps I should not have gone out for a bite to eat in what is normally a very safe area. You're right. I should let thugs dictate when and where I eat, and when I choose to be in my yard. That will solve everyone's problem, except mine.

I seriously doubt that is his argument. Though a bullet is certainly quicker than being bludgeoned to death. The point is that lack of guns does not mean lack of violence. Now presence of guns could mean lack of violence. Like maybe if the beating victim had a gun and pointed it at the guy with the bat, he would still have an intact skull.

Reminds me of my school days when we would place KICK ME signs on others backs without their knowledge. What is the difference when silly ass individuals proclaim no guns allowed thus ensuring potential robbers no resistance here for robbery,
