Many countries who did well early on are doing poorly now. Herd Immunity through infection or vaccine is the only long term answer. One of my friends had the virus in October- November. She lost 6 weeks of work between her husband and her and the double quarantine. He caught it working in New York City and brought it home. She didn't eat for two weeks and had to force liquids down. She also knew someone who had the virus twice.

Merck Pharmaceutical said they would not be making any Covid vaccines. They said it was just as good to get the mostly non lethal virus and have natural immunity.

Yes, Merck is discontinuing their vaccine development, but it isn't for the reason you've stated as their decision to change focus had NOTHING to do with the idea of herd immunity...
