I have heirloom pearls from my mom! Harris not for to wear anything that says class!
I used to appraise jewelry, it was a bad moment whenever people brought their "heirloom" things to me. Many many of grandma or great grandma's pearls were fake, and perhaps the worst part was that they were lousy fakes to boot.
I had a tradition with my first wife, I bought her a different strand of pearls every year. I knew people who dealt in wholesale pearls, I'd buy the grade, color, and size I wanted and have them professionally strung with double knots excellent clasps. I usually kept it to about $1000 to $1500, but they appraised for over $10k.
Whenever someone would question my call that the heirlooms were imitation pearls, I'd show them how to clink a pearl on their front tooth, then get them a real one to show them the difference in sound.
A friend of mine that appraised diamonds did something I always thought was a bit rude, when someone got pissed off when he said their diamond was fake, he'd pick up his dremel with a carbide wheel used to cut gold, which disintegrates in a puff of dust when it hits a diamond, and he'd hit the fake diamond, which would grind a big cut in the "diamond". He'd say you're sure this is a diamond, they'd say yes, and he'd say then it wouldn't get trashed by a carbide wheel.
Funny story, my brother bought his wife a three carat "diamond" for an anniversary, they had been having financial and marital problems as a result of their financial problems. We were playing cards when my wife asked his what was with the rock, and she was holding it out for her to see. I asked if I could see it, meaning hand it to me, my brother about passed out. It was a piece of Park Lane fake CZ that costs about $150. I was looking and didn't say anything, my wife said let me see, and I said nice as I handed it to her, she glanced at it and handed it over to Carrie. My brother thanked me for not calling fake, and I asked him what the hell he was thinking passing off a cubic to his wife as the real thing?
