I've heard that several European countries discontinued methadone treatment because it's merely a transfer of addictions and actually more dangerous.
In NY you see Methodonians (my term) sitting on benches, leaning forward with their faces almost touching the ground, or standing someplace bending forward like they're trying to touch the sidewalk with their nose. It's essentially bizarre, and they're all over the place in parts of Manhattan and Brooklyn.
