This week, Jewish congregations around the world are starting the annual tradition of reading the Bible from the beginning. The very first words of Genesis hold so much meaning, more than you might realize when you only read them in translation. To truly appreciate the depth of meaning in God’s words, we have to go back to the original Hebrew and see how it will change your understanding of the Scriptures…
Where it all begins…The Bible famously opens with the words “in the beginning,” but this is in fact an inaccurate English translation. In Hebrew the original meaning is far more interesting; the first word of the Bible is beresheet, meaning “at the heading”. The root of this term is the word rosh (ראש) which means “head”.
The head is not just the top of the body; it is the seat of the intellect and therefore the core of human identity. The Bible’s message is that God’s creation of heaven and earth is an intelligent, intentional process, not a random mistake. We believe that reading Scripture is so much more than a mere act of reading; it should involve true understanding of the words. For the Bible to reach your heart, you need to use your head. We invite you to read the Bible from the beginning with us in our live online courses.
