Twitter has agreed to hand over the details of people who post racist and anti-Semitic abuse anonymously on the micro-blogging site, it emerged today.

Following a long legal battle, the US-based company said it would cooperate with authorities in France who want to bring alleged criminals to justice.

The breakthrough is a significant test case for the millions who use social media to express hatred and anger without revealing their identities.

Next we will find our own liberal media, jumping up and down with joy!

As much as I may detest racist, sexist, antisematic, and other hate speech, I cringe and rebel against being "provided with proof" by agencies, neighbors, or groups. Shades of a totalitarian state. The same is true of the commonly accepted roadside instruction to report suspicion of DUI. This is not ignoring that so many killed on the roads were the fault of being drunk and driving. It is merely addressing how the state gets and keeps control by making ordinary citizens an arm of government, at a distance from their neighbors.

Forgive me for being underinformed, but who is the "Louise" in the title of this topic? As for the "resident Jew hater," I know who that is. Thanks in advance.

If you had been pounded by all those anti-Zionist posts as I have you would surely know who the Jew hater is. Surely you have seen enough of his posts to know who he is. I won't say the screen name but I have called him MM more than once since he bragged that he is a multi-millionaire.

I knew exactly who the Jew hater was, but I didn't understand why the other person was predicted to disappear. I stopped looking at the posts on that certain topic after it just got too intense. I did some following up a few minutes ago, and now I know why we probably won't be seeing any more posts from either of them again.

The author of all those awful anti-Semitic rants went way too far, and that kind of thing should not be tolerated by civilised people. But the other person, although provoked beyond belief, shouldn't have kept on replying, or at least shouldn't have responded with GPS co-ordinates.

Hmmm. Lasher may truly be an anti-semite, and there are some strong indications, but he also may be cutting a fine and dangerous line between being jewish and being zionist.

My next door neighbors as a child, for reasons there is no need to get into, were Polish Jews and frequently harbored us siblings, the husband had been in Auswiltz. Never meet a finer man in all my life, and his wife, Molly, helped to make most of the pain in my family of origin, with her always cuddling love, almost disappear. The gray boiled chicken I could have done without.

My personal opinion, for what little it may be worth, is it is contest. Who can come up with the "best" insult. Who can prove ....not going down that road. I have not taken the time, as did you, to follow up on their posts; however, you may be too optimistic about not further hearing their heinous, profane, cretinous and abhorrent commentary. The disconcerting issue is a forum starts. Individuals start a discussion. Some may agree and disagree; however, remain civil. The next thing we, as members, know it has been taken over by these individuals. When we attempt to regain control, we are not allowed as they start spewing their denigration on everyone else.

That's exactly what it was; a game of "can you top this?" Neither one could let the other have the last word, long after there was nothing to be gained. It was mildly amusing at first, but watching a ping-pong game gets to be tiresome after awhile. But I thought I'd have another look so I would understand what oldroy was referring to.

But the speculation about them disappearing from our forum started with the first post on this thread about hateful and abusive language elsewhere on the internet. It also reminded me that when those two were going at each other someone made a remark about turning L in for his anti-semitic tirades and having him banned from OPP. I think that was the idea for the person who started this topic.

Free speech sometimes protects the free speech we don't like. The Bill of Rights guarantees this for everyone. But when one person's rights infringe on someone else's rights, limits must be established. Laws against slander, libel, and terroristic threats protect people who become, or may become victims of those things.

I've seen hateful remarks here many times, and I've been called some nasty names myself. But I have never seen a personal challenge laid down with street directions before. I hope it won't get the whole forum shut down.
