If not for the union, people who just want to go to work, do their assigned job, go home, and get paid would have a better shot at career positions.
The union protects deadbeats, and rule violators while collecting dues from people who just go do the job.
I was a member of the firefighters union (IAFF), arch, back in the day, 8 years in and I sustained an injury off duty engaging in the rather hazardous sport of jumping out of airplanes. For some odd reason, the Asst Chief got his panties in wad about it and went so far as to appeal to the city manager for a hearing on possible dismissal from the FD.
A meeting was scheduled with the city mgr presiding, the city attorney, the Asst Chief, a court clerk and me and the union rep. He would be there on my behalf.
The rep was a lieutenant and he bailed on me the first time I met with him. We were going over the chief's complaint and of course, being a lieutenant, he didn't want to jeopardize himself by going against the asst chief.
I was on my own.
Went to personnel and got a list of all firefighters currently off duty or on light duty due to off duty injuries. 6, as I recall. One guy fell off his roof, another broke his wrist in a motorcycle race. I don't recall what happened with the others.
That's all I had, and, as it turned out, all I needed.
First thing I told them at the meeting was, "Firefighting is more dangerous than jumping out of airplanes." Then I showed them the list.
After a short consultation with the attorney, the City Mgr ruled in my favor.
Lost my faith in the union.
