I hate to admit this - but I NEVER heard of this day until there was an uproar by the left about Trump scheduling a rally on that date. I was amazed and embarrassed that I missed this as a day that was so important in our history. Since then, I've read a lot about it. I've concluded a few things:
1). It should not be just for blacks. It should be an Emancipation Day for whites as well as we rid ourselves of the curse of slavery on that date. Whites should be celebrating it along with blacks.
2). We have Black History Month - which creates awareness and as an American, if you don't know and understand what this month is all about - you should be ashamed of yourself.
3). We have Jackie Robinson Day in baseball - every American, even people who do not follow baseball know and participate and celebrate this historical day in our history.
4). It does not need to be a national holiday. It should be responsibly and enthusiastically supported by our Executive Branch and the House and Senate. It should be celebrated like Jackie Robinson Day or Flag Day which is on June 14.

How about combining it with Father's Day ?
...two cultural points of pride in one festive day.

Yeah, sure, I want to give a bunch of federal bureaucrats another free day off that I don't get. Not get my mail, not call the IRS, not visit a national park, not call Medicare. Sounds great.

I oppose the idea on the grounds that it is needlessly divisive. It just serves the interests of those whose goal is to divide people rather than unite them - black vs. white, liberal vs. conservative, Black Lives Matter vs. All Lives Matter, Northerners vs. Southerners. Why don't we all just think of ourselves as members of the same human race?

We have enough federal holidays. Open the door on this and every group will want their holiday. Will we have to have Hispanic Day, Native American Day, etc?

Can't because to many get a benefit from the consideration that we are a member of the same race.

John Cornyn is one of my congressional reps. He isn't my cup of tea. I want him voted out and sent home. Juneteenth is just another day off for him. I don't recall him ever passing a good bill unless he was vastly outnumbered. I'm pretty sure he is a deep state player. He is very squishy on too many issues. He loves photo ops though.

good morning PR,, well this is starting as a fine day.. Sun came up, clear and bright, like it had just been made.

Now..Juneteenth holiday?

think about this.. it is not just a day to make dem black guys happy.. it marks a great turning point in our countries history.

Abolishing slavery put the United States on the same level as the super powers of the day.. England, France all of Europe and most of the world had declared slavery unlawful..

June 19th was chosen for a number of reasons and events.. the actual date starts with an Oklahoma ruling against slavery.. the Emancipation Proclamation was a few years earlier.. 1864 vs 1866 i think.. then about a dozen more events fell on the same date over the decades..

Wish I could recall and list them all or at least more..

This should be for all the nation, not only a holiday for Black or descendants of slaves..

someone mentioned we have to many federal holidays as it is.. Now I could agree with that idea, but bet we could never agree on which holidays to remove..

This day has been observed over the last few years in the twin cities. maybe not every year but parades and block parties have been held.

Lets do it..

I also agree that this is true..
I also agree that this is true.....
