He was not a general when he retired. He was not in the military when he retired. He was a cabinet member. He was Secretary of Defense. The general title is from his earlier career and has no bearing in this discussion.

Oh my goodness, from the esteemed Bill O'Reilly, who was fired by FOX for his sexual indiscretions. Oh my but yes that is a fine, unbiased, highly regarded source of truth indeed. According to the reports, O'Reilly paid six women nearly $50 million to settle various sexual harassment lawsuits. After the first New York Times investigation revealed that O'Reilly and Fox News had settled five sexual harassment lawsuits totaling $13 million, Fox News terminated O'Reilly's employment in April 2017. In October 2017, The New York Times reported an additional settlement of $32 million that O'Reilly had paid to settle a sixth sexual harassment lawsuit which had been filed against him by former Fox News analyst Lis Wiehl because of the "non-consensual sexual relationship" she says O'Reilly initiated with her.

But I actually miss him on FOX. He often had an interesting take on things, and he was far more "fair and balanced" than the vast majority of the rest of the FOX nighttime lineup. I'd love to see him come back.

Bill Barr?????

I'm surprised you would even admit that anything you are relaying came from Barr. He is a lying sack of crap too. I'm about 80% certain that once the administration changes in January, Mr. Barr will be spending most of the remainder of his time in jail where he belongs. Barr being in that position has resulted in so much damage to this country it will take decades to overcome. Apparently he was the one that ordered the smoke/teargas/paperballs, rubber bullets and aggressive tactics in front of the White House on Monday. He does nothing to protect the American people or uphold justice, he is a Trump lackey and he will end his days in jail. My prophecy only here, but if there is true justice in this country, that is what needs to happen.

TUNE IN!!???? ME???? Oh just how hypocritical is that. I am so tuned in that running circles around you is nearly effortless. C'mon, I watch all the networks, I follow a few dozen online blogs and sites, I watch domestic and international sites, and both right and left leaning sites and networks. I do my own research and when questions come up, I come to my own conclusions using multiple data sources, and I care about facts and truth more than you can comprehend. I would not be caught dead using a source like Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, Rachel Maddow, Brian Williams, Ann Coultier, Don Lemon, Chris Coumo or any other of the mouths out there. They are all biased as hell. Although there is a vast difference in the overall truthfulness between sites from the right and left.

The left is good at pulling out actual factual tidbits and exploiting those, selective use of what is usually true material but they only provide limited context to support their position. The right just plain makes crap up and lies in a wholesale unembarrassed manner like its just the simplest thing to do in the world. FOX is not news in the evening, its all "The Apprentice Junior".

I suggest you widen your search for truth. You have a laptop and an internet connection, you have the world at your fingertips. Spend some time getting more acquainted with that world so you can educate yourself and become an informed American.

In Union There Is Strength

I have watched this week’s unfolding events, angry and appalled. The words “Equal Justice Under Law” are carved in the pediment of the United States Supreme Court. This is precisely what protesters are rightly demanding. It is a wholesome and unifying demand—one that all of us should be able to get behind. We must not be distracted by a small number of lawbreakers. The protests are defined by tens of thousands of people of conscience who are insisting that we live up to our values—our values as people and our values as a nation.

When I joined the military, some 50 years ago, I swore an oath to support and defend the Constitution. Never did I dream that troops taking that same oath would be ordered under any circumstance to violate the Constitutional rights of their fellow citizens—much less to provide a bizarre photo op for the elected commander-in-chief, with military leadership standing alongside.

We must reject any thinking of our cities as a “battlespace” that our uniformed military is called upon to “dominate.” At home, we should use our military only when requested to do so, on very rare occasions, by state governors. Militarizing our response, as we witnessed in Washington, D.C., sets up a conflict—a false conflict—between the military and civilian society. It erodes the moral ground that ensures a trusted bond between men and women in uniform and the society they are sworn to protect, and of which they themselves are a part. Keeping public order rests with civilian state and local leaders who best understand their communities and are answerable to them.

James Madison wrote in Federalist 14 that “America united with a handful of troops, or without a single soldier, exhibits a more forbidding posture to foreign ambition than America disunited, with a hundred thousand veterans ready for combat.” We do not need to militarize our response to protests. We need to unite around a common purpose. And it starts by guaranteeing that all of us are equal before the law.

Instructions given by the military departments to our troops before the Normandy invasion reminded soldiers that “The Nazi slogan for destroying us…was ‘Divide and Conquer.’ Our American answer is ‘In Union there is Strength.’” We must summon that unity to surmount this crisis—confident that we are better than our politics.

Donald Trump is the first president in my lifetime who does not try to unite the American people—does not even pretend to try. Instead he tries to divide us. We are witnessing the consequences of three years of this deliberate effort. We are witnessing the consequences of three years without mature leadership. We can unite without him, drawing on the strengths inherent in our civil society. This will not be easy, as the past few days have shown, but we owe it to our fellow citizens; to past generations that bled to defend our promise; and to our children.

We can come through this trying time stronger, and with a renewed sense of purpose and respect for one another. The pandemic has shown us that it is not only our troops who are willing to offer the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of the community. Americans in hospitals, grocery stores, post offices, and elsewhere have put their lives on the line in order to serve their fellow citizens and their country. We know that we are better than the abuse of executive authority that we witnessed in Lafayette Square. We must reject and hold accountable those in office who would make a mockery of our Constitution. At the same time, we must remember Lincoln’s “better angels,” and listen to them, as we work to unite.

Only by adopting a new path—which means, in truth, returning to the original path of our founding ideals—will we again be a country admired and respected at home and abroad.

I know I do and was getting fed-up with being locked up inside my own home. We've as a society survived other pandemics and it was time to get back to work. The Dems just want to harm the economy and thereby take away another victory from DJT..

The strong will survive!!

I don't know where you live but I didn't think anyone is locked in their home. Most stayed allow trips for essential things. How can you say the democrats went to harm the economy? Another victory for trump, rust victories had he had, the economy had improved. Do you credit the tax cut? It didn't amount to a whole lot of money for me. Cost the fed a bunch. You support trump, that's fine. I happen to think he's a liar & con & has done nothing to unite the country..

How about this;

If trump wins you can come over and I'll cook you a big steak dinner and provide your favorite beverage and you can help me pack for my move to Canada, New Zealand, Australia or somewhere similar. You might also have to listen to me cry a good bit about how my country has driven me away. It will be a very sad day indeed. You will have to store up a full supply of empathy to be prepared to assist me before you come.

Mattis speaks truth! Bull!
mattis like many top brass has always been political.
Matt is said he wouldn't start commenting on the present administration and nearing the election he breaks his vow.
I was totally on Mattis's side when Trump fired him
I am not on his side now.
Interesting that a military man should stay out of politics and obey his superior's orders, but Matt is and others do not.
So Matt is has joined the Trump haters.

Nicely said.

I don't happen to know much about bone spurs or what kind of draft dodger he was or was not, but the description _feels_ apt given all the other clues we have about his behavior, and given how derogatorily he speaks of _other_ people.

Trump's wrong in how he talks about others, such as McCain & Mattis.

We've had some experience of presidents who tend to speak respectfully. Many Trump supporters hate it.

Now we get a prime illustration of how things play out when the president is habitually disrespectful. At least some of the Trump supporters seem to love it.
