There was no trial in the HOR------their part is akin to the grand jury in criminal cases. Only probable cause for trial, in other words. The Senate is the trial, so witnesses should be heard from. My only question is this: by saying no witnesses, are they simply refusing witnesses for the trial or are they trying to protect themselves from having to testify about their own actions?

I am aware there was no "trial" in the HOR ... and I should have used the word "investigation" instead of "trial" ... my mistake.

But there were plenty of witnesses ... witnesses brought forth by the democrats. Whether or not more witnesses are necessary should all have been handled by the HOR before finalizing their AOI and carrying out their ridiculous celebratory signing and their "solemn march" over to the Senate. They can whine all they want about the "time it takes to get through the courts" but that is the way it is done. Going through the courts to get subpoenas takes time for the Senate, too. So the Senate should tell them if they want more witnesses, they should retract these AOI, take their "solemn march" back to the HOR and finish the job they started ... and then bring them back for consideration by the Senate. Meantime, we have our own work to do. It is the HOR's job. They do not have a right to impose their responsibilities on others.

House leaders either have a solid and convincing case (which they claim) or they don't (in which case they need more witnesses).

As for your question, why would they need protection for their own actions? I don't recall any of them being on the hotseat in this ridiculous charade. I also believe that there are a lot of Republicans in both the HOR and the Senate who are secretly never-Trumpers (well, except for Romney, who is not so subtle about it), and would like to see him gone. If they thought that this would be their opportunity to get rid of him, they would jump on this extension of the trial in a heartbeat in the hopes that it would be his downfall. But they have not.

Neither the HOR nor the Senate is a criminal court. Congress is the Legislative Branch of our government, it is not the Judicial Branch or the Department of Justice. Impeachment is a political process, not a criminal trial.
