What is "Fasting?"

"Fasting" is talked about all through the Holy Bible, both Old Testament and New Testament.

When seeking direction from our Lord God Jesus Christ, a person will at times "Fast." This is going without eating for a period of time in order to receive spiritual direction in our lives. When a person eats a full meal, their system is busy digesting it, sleepy, and/or rejuvenated with energy to do more tasks for the day. When a person needs to be close to the Lord for their own reasons, Fasting allows the bodies system to be still for the Holy Spirit of God to be focused on, and inspirations to be received. Prayer, during a "Fast", for what ever your cause is, is the only way to conduct a Fast.

Also, just like any personal prayer, praise, and worship to our Lord Jesus Christ, Fasting is to be done Privately, and responsibly, not as a 'show for others.' This is what is meant by a "prayer closet", praying and or fasting simply between you and the Lord.

16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
(attention from men, wordly appointed stations and status from men- not of the Lord)
17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
(Christians now and in the future are under the 'anointing' of Jesus Christ)
18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, *but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly.* Matthew 6.

This is my Biblical take on "Fasting."

That's my view also. Prayer and Fasting are not open for public display. It is between you and God only.

Fasting is very important part of my faith. I agree it is private. Public displays are counterproductive.

I was also taught charity should always be anonymous. Once when I was a child our neighbor was having financial problems.

My Dad took boxes of groceries over when our neighbor was at church and left them on the porch. When I asked him why we did not leave a note, he replied "we want to help not make the family feel bad. If you make a show of your deeds God is not pleased."
