Curious what made your Dad want to leave his home at that time? It would seem his area of expertise would be highly valued there also? Do you and your family still visit and also now have dual citizenship? Just curious.
Yes, his area of expertise was indeed highly valued at home. But he was lured by the adventure of living in America for a few years (where everyone is rich). My parents had every intention of returning home but then they found out why they thought everyone in America is rich - because America is a debt trap where people can pretend to be rich as long as they pay it all back plus interest. That's actually a new concept for many immigrants who fall into the trap. I know a number of immigrants from Europe who say they got stuck here because of their debt. In short, my father stayed her for the bigger paychecks so he can pay off the bigger debts.
My younger brother was born here - he has dual citizenship. I wasn't so I had to wait until I was 18, then pass tests, swear my allegiance and pay money to naturalize.

My family seems to be in the process of doing a full circle by generations. My grandfather came from Canada, his son,(my dad) would have been able to acquire dual citizenship, but it doesn't extend to the grandchildren and I really wish it did, I appreciate options. Now, my daughter happens to have met a Canadian and married him and is now waiting for citizenship, which is a five-year wait. Citizenship does not automatically happen through marriage but if she has a child it will have citizenship.

I'm sure those 5 years will go fast. Does your daughter live in Canada? I do wish I had dual-citizenship, but I take comfort in knowing that despite the U.S. government forcing me to give up my British nationality according to U.S. law, the UK still recognizes me as British ("once British - always British") and there really isn't anything the U.S. can do about that. I've been here since I was 3, so it really doesn't matter much to me but I do know that the UK has a better record of standing by their citizens when they get into trouble overseas. So I've been thinking about getting a UK passport.

It appears the racists still have a hold on our country and still trying to manipulate the flow. I find our concerns keep missing the mark. If the country wants to appeal to higher educated qualified people we need to up our game for wanting to live here, right now I'm not seeing the big appeal for people to come and raise their family here. All we're getting are the people running from poor and oppressed countries,
where at bare minimum they don't live under a dictator and their life can have some improvement. That's if they're not shot or arrested for some reason and incarcerated, lol. Welcome to the USA.

A few things have changed since my immigration... Basically, conditions have improved in a lot of countries around the world while conditions have declined here. So, I agree and someone ought to tell Trump that the reason why we don't get as many people from Norway, is because Norway is in many ways more attractive than the U.S. The same can be said for most of the Western European nations, which is one reason why they have a bigger immigration problem than we do.
This is also why anytime you hear a "patriot" suggesting our exceptional greatness with national comparisons it's always with countries emerging from the third world.
I would still fight for this country because it's where I've lived all my life and it's where I raised a family. But I don't subscribe to any of that USA #1 chauvinism because it's BS. Yeah, it's better here than it is some third world countries, I'll just leave it there.

Instead of ..., we'll leave the light on for ya, it's we'll turn it off so you can trip over the front steps. Welcome to Trump USA.
Well, we both know what that's all about and for that matter we are seeing this happen in Europe too... Brexit is 99% about keeping immigrants out. I expect this will get worse as the rise in climate change and global tensions increase.
All the more reason why we could really use a president with the strength and courage to lead the world, instead of a weak, self-obsessed turd who only seems capable of bickering with the world.
