Don't need the president to tell you that. Saudi Arabia was founded as a nation state in 1932 - 12 years before Operation Overlord. The new kingdom was reliant on limited agriculture and pilgrimage revenues. In 1938, vast reserves of oil were discovered in the Al-Ahsa region along the coast of the Persian Gulf, and full-scale development of the oil fields began in 1941. In 1939, Saudi Arabia declared its neutrality. They remained neutral until February 1945 when they declared war on Germany. This enabled the kingdom to enter the United Nations as a founding member. The Saudis never built much more than a national security force until after the war was over.

How could a non-citizen serve in the armed forces?

Promised by who?

This is the first I have heard of it

There have been a lot of Latinos who grew up in the United States who were not citizens but did serve in our military. I personally served with Filipinos who were not citizens but were in our military. The promise was a pathway to citizenship.

Sadly, more than 5,000 Filipinos were deported by the Obama administration, regardless of their service in the military. Historically, they did have an advantage, if they were living in Hawaii before statehood they automatically became US citizens and ergo their children when Hawaii became a state. Additionally, any Filipinos living in the US who claimed to be from Hawaii became citizens. This reduced the "illegal" Filipinos to less than .5 million.

BTW, legal immigrants can serve in the military...there are several "freeways" to citizenship for immigrants. For example doctors, scientists, and computer engineers are pushed to the front providing they pass a background investigation and can speak/write English. No military service required.

I give you encouragement and you show me how thin skinned you are. But that's ok. Are you in a crisis?
I can adjust my kindness settings if you are.

Thank you for the lengthy ramble through history but my comment related to Trumps offhand remark about how the Kurds were not at Normandy. Just kind of a dumb non sequitur that invited a response.

It is barely credible that the Kurds whom with we partnered to contain and destroy ISIS, who sacrificed 11,000 fighters in this cause, who trusted us to do right by them would be so carelessly tossed aside like so much disposable fodder. Barely credible in a human decency context but quite believable from a man who has shown such callous disregard for fellow humans in his thirst for autocracy and personal aggrandisement.

Greenlighting Erdogan to attack without warning, withdrawing American troops in the service of the specious notion of "bringing our boys home" then sending 2000 more troops to help defend Saudi Arabia has bought him well deserved bipartisan shaming.

Yeah, the U.S. has a history of inducing and using certain nation's and Individuals of certain racial and ethicnicitys that are not consistent with it's persuasion of preference, using them to further their interest, then totally shunning and disregarding them the way a person would disregard a grasped hot potato.

There is a larger end game in play, be patient. Turkey has no business being in NATO under their current dictatorship.

Although it was in the seventies, I had the misfortune to cross train with some Turkish (Did I say Turkish? I meant Turdish troops.) They were little more than thugs with uniforms. Poorly trained and poorly disciplined. I can't speak to now, but back then, the best thing they could have done for NATO was defect to the Russians, who would have shot their asses out of hand and saved everyone some grief.

We were only supposed to be there for a month, it's become ten years. When do you say enough? Have you ever sent a letter to a mother or father that their son or daughter had been killed in action? I have. The only thing more fun (sarcasm) is watching the flag-draped casket.

What does it say about our character as a Nation, when we make promises we don't intend to keep? How many young people did we deport, who faithfully served this country as a member of our Armed Forces, who were promised citizenship?

The Liar-in-chief leading a country of liars, while a plethora of people willingly offer excuses for lying.

I agree with you. I bet most folks do not know just how long we have been involved with Syria....in 1946 the US began to "stabilize" the area, by that I mean the CIA tried to nudge General Husni al-Za’im into staging a military coup against President Shukri al-Kuwatli. He did so, but didn’t last too long, being overthrown by Col. Sami al-Hinnawi, who was overthrown by Col. Adib Shishakli. All of this happened within nine months. Turns out we weren't that great at promoting stability in the Middle East back then, either. A rinse and repeat, 1957, 1967, 1970, and we all know about beyond 2000.

What I am saying, it does not matter how much blood is spilled or money pumped into this portion of desert, nothing will change. We have been trying to buy their respect for 74 years, there is never be a "good" time to sever a bad relationship....but there comes a time to walk away from unwinnable and endless war.

Pennylynn . . . Bravo! That is the very best and most thorough delineation of what has gone on in that region for longer than I have been alive. It is time to bring American troops home, and stop pumping our treasure into something that is unwinnable. It is high time that we, the USA, stops being the world's policeman.

A lot of folks didn't know and don't know that this particular group or army of Kurds are Marxists and some are terrorists. So, good riddance to bad Apples. I wonder if it bothered this guy when Hussein Obama
Gave Iran millions and millions of taxpayers dollars. I didn't Hear any screaming about a good President
Looking out for the welfare of the country then, it all depends on which side of the fence your on. Obama hurt
This country more than any foreign government ever did. Now we have a President who cares about the country and it's people.
