Or not taxing. My theory is that if we actually had to pay for the spending (yes, tax and spend) then we'd be much further along in having to decide what we, as a nation, really want to pay for. Borrow and spend keeps us from having to confront those choices.

It's actually a fairly conservative position, this tax and spend. Pay now for what you buy.

I can't speak for you, but personally I don't want to see tax dollars spent to fund studies on why lesbians are fat, or why fat girls get fewer dates than non fat girls.

Those are the kinds of things, when looking at where to cut, I'm going to agree with.

Not that those kinds of cuts will make a big dent. So let's say you and I went into negotiation, would you be willing to discuss the revenue side if a good faith sign of spending reform were on the table. Personally, I'm willing to negotiate a lot. Bureaucracies get sclerotic, so I'm good with trimming fat you identify.

The big negotiation would be the reform of 'entitlements'...and I don't see a way forward without increasing the revenues for those programs. Reform, sure. Bring the ideas to the table. And I'm probably as cynical as you when it comes to the idea of dedicated funds...that so called 'lockbox' was raided as soon as it was established.

But at a certain point, the red team and blue team are going to have to huddle up and figure this out. I suspect the prospect of raising taxes to cover the deficit would focus the mind.

Trump promised to eliminate the deficit in eight years. So far, he has increased it by 68%

As long as the Congress has the power of the purse, and won"t work with the President I guess that will happen, but to the positive side of Trump - He has in the first term done a great job of keeping his campaign promises, as apposed to most prior presidents!!!

Lonewolf this is Romans 13:1-7 please read and understand what you are doing.

13 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

6 This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. 7 Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.

Spending bills (budget) are generated by the House of Reps. If he vetoes the bills then the gov’t shuts down and you blame him. If he signs the budget bill then you blame him. There is nothing he can do to win favor with people like you. The debt will eventually cause massive economic problems.
