Did you read Farewell to Catalunya, also by Orwell? That book recounted his days in Catalunya as a convinced Communist enlisted in the Catalan, (red) forces, to do battle with Franco in 1936. Orwell spent a few months there, (in Barcelona), found out that there was nothing "Communist" about the ragtag "red" army. He escaped, made his way back to the states and wrote Farewell to Catalunya then Animal Farm, then 1984. As history played out, he was right on in his evaluation of the so-called "people's system".
