They have to be. You just can't separate the man from the fact that he took down both the Republican and Democrat parties. Hell, if that was the only yardstick, given what he was up against, how is he a loser? He skipped all the standard prelims (Senator, Governor, etc) and took a shot at the brass ring and won. You won't admit it but that's what really chafes your butt.

I think the election of Hilary Clinton would have been a disaster for the "Democrat [sic] Party". It would've been just a continuation of the neoliberalism that has held sway over the Democratic Party since Carter. She would have been blocked by Republicans more than Obama ever was (overt sexism being more acceptable than covert racism). And the Democrats would not have gained a majority in the House.
