Do you think the old Soviet Union was kept at bay by progressive liberalism? Or just maybe they kept to themselves out of fear of a US military response?

Kept at bay?? are you sure you recall the cold war correctly???

Preventive, yes.. at bay? not so much...

do you recall Hungary uprising? fast forward to Russia in Afghanistan..

The Berlin air left...endless provocations and brush-fire...

Years of brinkmanship??

no point now days.. we have other pressing matters to be concerned about..

Photo Ops with dictators and nothing in return..

On the other hand, yes we did provide the defense which kept the USSR from moving west..
and that was clearly what we wanted..

That seems a great idea.. Oohhh , my little girl was not so reasonable about them.

When she was little, rescued a garter snake for a cat, it was injured, took inside, bandaged it put it in a glass jug and proudly showed it to me when I came home.. coiled up with veggies and flies to eat. grass to sleep in..

Some children... I knew not what to say..

Exactly right! Europe still hasn't recovered from the two world wars. They emerged beaten and forlorn, hating America for winning what they could not win and yearning for the communist lifestyle the Russians would have given them if America hadn't stopped them in Berlin. America rebuilt Europe and protects Europe yet today, and the Europeans still hate America.

We are excessive in the European mind.
We have too much, we are too powerful, too productive, too innovative, and they hate us for it.
They think it's a luxury to take a nadler in a closet down the hall.
You've got to be in a very romantic mood to think that Europe is a fabulous place.

I was in Germany during the middle 50s. No doubt in my mind that the U. S. Army kept Stalin out of western Europe. All the German people I talked to were afraid of the Russians and I heard several stories about how brutal the Russians were.

Paris has become a Turkish Toilet.
So much for their smug sophistry and liberal tolerance.
Paristan.

Hello, Manning long time no see. Hope you are well welcome back.

Hello back bggamers! I am far better now, thanks.

I lived and worked in Holland from 1974 to 1984, and witnessed an insidious rise of communist thinking, schools teaching the Manifesto, and allowing my daughter to be attacked with many ridiculous stories about the US. I had to move her to a different, less infested school.

My company there, a Philips subsidiary focused on military systems, was surrounded by hundreds of bussed-in communist sympathizers one day and several broke into the manufacturing area intent on disrupting things, but our guards let loose the Dobermans on them and they fled, but of course the guards called the dogs off before they could hurt anyone. There is a virulent strain of communists running around in Holland to this day, but they are perhaps only 5% or 10% of the population.

The next city over, Enschede, was wiped out by US bombers in 1944 as they aimed at the major railhead there. Some of the old-timers there really did hate Americans, and we ran into that hate a number of times. It is hard to blame them.

War isn't meant to be fun and unfortunately, there are victims that are not doing any fighting but just trying to survive. There is no way to win a war without civilian casualties its that simple and no side can be blamed but its hard
