Do you fear they could do no better and the blame would shift to them?

Those billboards have not been seen by me in 30 years. What people here did not like was Californians selling their homes for half a million then coming up here and buying homes and inflating the value of them.. It happened very quickly. Used to be an averge home could be bought for $20,000 then they suddenly went to $80,000 now over $200,000. Rents are outrageous here now --which is a major factor in homeless familys. It is only going to get worse. Would you hire a person who is unwashed and wearing ragged clothes? The caste system is now alive and well..

I remember homes south of Portland that I checked out selling for around $200,000 + that were unbelievable. I think lumber and home building products were inexpensive. I was impressed. It WAS some time ago. But still in all, not a very nice way to treat your neighbors. I think Hillsboro was the area, if I'm not mistaken.

Same here in Florida, this house sold for 19,000 and to replace it insurance wise has gone to 220,000. I see no tent city here. Are things perfect, hell no but I see no needles, people living out of shopping carts not tents on the sidewalks.

You are in a good area apparently. My neighbor is from Lake Wales and Pahokee---extreme poverty. Coos county where I live used to be the number one lumber export center of the world. Now instead of exporting lumber we export logs and along with it the thousands of good paying jobs we once had here. We were destroyed by corporate greed and shareholders demands of dividend checks.

Tom I saw a special on a guy who lived with the homeless in San Francisco for over a year. He says the rent rising is last on the list why most are homeless. He blamed it mostly on drugs, and mental health, plus a number of (for lack of a better term) sorry as people who would rather pick up free minimum benefits than work. These liberal enclaves are actually subsidizing bad behavior.

We have a lot of the same here. The hagged out hookers too ugly for the trade anymore and the publically intoxticated and schitzophrenic drug addicts.

It is not a problem caused by Liberals. It is too many people--not enough resources being applied in the right direction.

The thing is, homelessness is most prevalent in large cities in "liberal" states, and one primary reason these cities are unable to house them, other than the problems stemming from high property taxes and ridiculously high costs of living (including housing) is the corruption that is more prevalent in "liberal" cities.

All a developer has to do is write checks to a few campaign funds or the right "foundations" and he gets zoning priority over any property he wishes to build condos, hotels or offices, and it's "oh, well... So much for the domiciling of the undomiciled."

I've read stories in the NY Post of unused city owned buildings and other properties in various boroughs that could be easily converted into SROs or shelters that were somehow "overlooked" until suddenly a real estate developer appears out of nowhere and buys the property from the city.

It will be no different in L.A., S.F., Chicago, etc, and I doubt that Portland would be much different.

Seems there is always someone looking for the opportunity to cash in. I just read an article about a "van lord" in L A . The guy exploits the lapsed law against living in cars and parks a fleet of old vans on city streets and rents them out to the homeless. He keeps the keys to the ignition and moves them when he has to and collects rent from his tenants.

Most of the homeless are taking correspondence courses on "how to hotwire".

Actually, in the L.A. area from around Culver City to the beach towns those electric scooters you can rent (Bird, Lyft, etc all seem to have them here in profusion, parked along the sidewalks) are a target for homeless people -- they have some app they can download that will activate a scooter without a credit card payment and can also turn off the GPS -- stolen scooter, off the grid. You see homeless guys zipping past with all their stuff hanging from handle bars, etc.
