All those programs, like Pit Bulls and parolees is a sham. They are so heavily scripted so is the Dog Whisper. Surely you are the only one in America that still watches that stuff and think it is real. Wow! Regardless, there are plenty of Pit Bulls that are good pets. I would not want people just to give up their animals; but you can see the sanity of having all of them neutered. Right? And those that have bitten people to have the canine teeth removed. It is safe for the dog and no one has to lose their best friend.

Watch pit bulls and parolees on animal planet. They are great dogs if treated right.
To counter the starting article: It was on the news the other day about a pit bull that saved his family from a fire. He wouldn't leave until all of the family was out of the house. He was badly burned.
A girl walking down the road with her pit. Man pulls up and tries to kidnap her. She and the pit are fine. The cops are looking for someone with several holes in his leg. I have heard many of these stories.

This often happens when humans start breeding for characteristics. Designer dogs! Take the Lacy, this dog will be able to survive in any situation. They have been bred to take down large animals, as big as bulls. They can survive eating scrub grass and go for days without water. Now they are great dogs, but in 20 years they too may become a hazard to humans and in particular small children. I like mutts. Most of them are a combination of many breeds. I do love animals, and my heart breaks when I turn away a pit bull. But, my family has to come above my rescue efforts.

Thank you for the insight and thought you put into your comment.

You should look up villa lobos rescue in New Orleans. They have a web site. They do just pit bull rescue. They would be able to tell you the closest pit rescue to your location.

I agree with you, have had two and never a problem. Years ago we had a half wolf half German Shepard she went to work with me everyday, I drove truck local. Smartest dog that I ever had but very protective and took out a intruder in my son's room. Cops took her and she never the same then I got her back so we had to put her down. Sorta replaced her with a female pit from a breeder, she was a 5th generation of non-fighters. Now yes they have a bad reputation but a great many come from puppy mills.

This breed as been misused, abused and unloved.

Sorry, I disagree. The Pit Bull has a bad reputation only because they're the favorites of illegal dog fighting and for protecting drug stashes. My son has a Pit Bull (one of many he has had) and she is a sweetheart. This may be one of the most misunderstood breeds. It is the owners who are the bad culprits, not the breed. If you have ever watched Caesar Milan on the "Dog Whisperer" TV program, he loves Pit Bulls and states the same fact that it is the owners, not the breed. The media has amplified the bad press on this breed.

There is far more to the story you just quoted.

And, you can find these stories for German Shepards, Mastiffs, Rottweilers, Dobermans, etc. etc.

And, do these stories state what their environment was like? The owner? Like I said, you can make almost any dog mean, and a killer if one mistreats, or trains them to. It's not the breed, it's the owner!

I had a dobie when my kids were little. Best babysitter I ever had. Wouldn't let the kids go out alone. But if I whispered "watch" he'd tear you up.

I too had a Doberman, a wonderful friend and as gentle as a lamb. She let my boys climb on her and she loved to go sledding with the kids. She would chase them to the bottom of the hill and then pull the sled back to the top for them. She was funny, her maternal instinct was so strong that she adopted kittens and allowed them to nurse. She would carry those kitten around in her strong mouth and they were never harmed. She died of real old age; she was 19. The whole family cried as though we had lost a human member of the family. She was the smartest dog we ever owned and all her commands were in German. I took her with me when I assigned overseas. Always felt that she understood everything I said to her. That is a great memory, thank you for reminding me.

You will not find any pit bulls where I live. But, thank you. Should I be called for another rescue of these dogs, I will be able to refer them on to help.

She was a family member and Lord is it hard when you lose that type of family member.

Okay, that sort of crap comes directly under the heading of Uncalled-For Vitriol and doesn't make you look particularly better than Brian.

Yes it is. She is buried under her favorite tree. Each month I go out and trim the grass in the spring and summer, in winter I can still almost see her with the kids and it was not just mine, but my kid's friends; sliding down that hill laughing and the dog at their heels. I remember her with love, because that is what she was. May she rest in peace.

What a wonderful walk down memory lane!!

I agree in part to banning this breed. I have cared for many children that where mauled by all different breeds. My oldest daughter had a Pitt Bull given to her 10 years ago. Her name was Sage. I warned my daughter multiple times to get rid of the dog and she refused. The outcome was 10 years of the most loving pet anyone would find. She was an excellent guard dog to. No one would ever have been brave enough to go into their house uninvited. She played well with the children. She was just so loving. Sadly Sage passed away a week ago. She will be greatly missed. Pit Bulls are usually a bad choice if they've been previously owned. You never really know how they've been cared for. Anyone who chooses a dog for a pet needs to be fully aware any dog can turn on you at any time.

Ginger, thank you. She has been gone for a long time from this earth, but she will always own a spot in my heart.

We definitely have that problem with Gracie. Fixed female labs are really notorious for putting on the pounds.

Yep. I've got one of them. She thinks my bed is hers and she doesn't mind pushing me out so she can stretch out. She was my son's dog. He got orders to Iraq, so we made a fast trip to Kentucky and brought her home. By the time he got home she had gotten use to my bed and didn't want to go back to sleeping on the floor so she's been with us and he gets visitation.

Your welcome. I believe all animals should be cared for. I've got a couple stray cats that are now mine. Someone dumped them. One (Bonkers), name fits. Very pretty Manx cat but boy is she warped. Had her five years now. At least the last owner fixed her before dumping her. My youngest daughter found her almost starved to death. Then my oldest daughter brought me Sabrina last summer. Another fixed crazy cat. She's getting use to us finally.
