You are right, Robert E lee didn't own slaves but like George Washington, his wife did and he like Thomas Stone Wall Jackson who also didn't directly, own slaves, freed them. They wouldn't leave.

From what I've read, during the war Grant invited Lee to come reclaim his estate, but Lee demurred. I wonder why?
