Abraham Lincoln owned slaves. Ulysses Grant owned slaves which he reluctantly freed after the Emancipation proclamation. Robert E. Lee owned no slaves. Go figure!

Slavery did NOT begin or end in America. It wasn’t a new thing in the northern states or the southern states. It’s time to stop beating each other over the head about this.

Robert E Lee graduated from West Point at the top of his class. He was enlisted in the U.S. army but switched when Virginia was attacked. He fought for Virginia not slavery. You are right, Robert E lee didn't own slaves but like George Washington, his wife did and he like Thomas Stone Wall Jackson who also didn't directly, own slaves, freed them. They wouldn't leave.

Arlington cemetery is located on Robert E Lee's home grounds which were confiscated after the war! Mike

From what I've read, during the war Grant invited Lee to come reclaim his estate, but Lee demurred. I wonder why?

Lee was trying to bring the Country back together. He was trying to bring the Country back together. :He wasn't fighting against the Union as much as he was defending Virginia. That certainly must have put him in a tough position.

Even though the south lost, there seems to be more material published about Lee's abilities as a general than about Grant's.
