An 85-year-old woman was apparently attacked by pit bulls inside her Kaufman, Texas, home.

The body of an 85-year-old Texas woman was found in her home Monday after police say she was apparently attacked by two large and aggressive pit bulls in the home.

Dorothy Hamilton's body was discovered in the home Monday by her son, police said. The dogs belonged to her son and were normally locked in a bedroom. Police believe the dogs broke through the door to get at the woman, Kaufman police told MyFoxDFW.com."

The more helpless the victim, the more likely the attack. Pit bulls are constantly killing babies, toddlers and the old and infirm. Yet owners of this vile breed keep insisting on what loving and wonderful pets they are. Some may be, right up until they decide to attack, because what separates pit bulls from other breeds is their tendency to suddenly attack non-threatening targets without warning. The breed should be outlawed.

I would support a ban on pit bulls.

I agree. These animals are not pets. They were bred to fight.

They are outlawed in some places, but most of the time they are treated like any other dog. Now I love dogs and I would never normally go against any breed, but this one I do draw the line on. I have been around them and have never felt comfortable in the same room with them. I was around a half wolf and half German Shepard and felt better around him then I did a Pit Bull.

I'm sorry to say this, but I would not be unhappy to see this breed go. This is the only breed that I have ever seen that can draw blood just being playful, and yes I had that done to me. I have been around several other breeds that are considered dangerous and I have never felt threatened, but I did the first time I met a Pit Bull.

I can see people saying that other breeds draw blood too and I agree, but it is by accident with them. I have had my Yourkie draw blood, but not by biting me several times like that Pit Bull did. I just can't justify keeping that breed around for anything other then war dogs and I am not sure they would be very good for that either.

Years ago, when I had just gotten a divorce and lived seven miles from town on my farm with my two small children, I bought a pit bull puppy. She slept on the bed beside me, went everywhere with us, and was part of the family. The only facet of family life that dog did not have was a chair at the dining table.
BUT....one day when I was in the corner of the tractor garage...bent over and digging in a box for a tool... the hair on the back of my neck stood straight up. Being bent almost half over, I looked under my arm and saw Rosalie....my "sweet" pit bull....about 15 feet back....snarling, foam dripping from her jaws.....and about to attack.
I yelled at her. She sort of lightly shook her head, like there was something familiar....
I yelled again. She really shook her head, sat down, then came up to be petted.
I had a neighbor who had wanted her....so I walked directly to the house, picked up the phone and called him....and Mr. Johnson had a new dog within a short period of time.
Never, never again....I don't care how gentle, sweet, loving owners claim their animal/s to be. There is something innate within these animals, so primitive, that triggers a response no one would ever wish to see that I can find no redeeming quality within any of the breed.

Sorry, I disagree. The Pit Bull has a bad reputation only because they're the favorites of illegal dog fighting and for protecting drug stashes. My son has a Pit Bull (one of many he has had) and she is a sweetheart. This may be one of the most misunderstood breeds. It is the owners who are the bad culprits, not the breed. If you have ever watched Caesar Milan on the "Dog Whisperer" TV program, he loves Pit Bulls and states the same fact that it is the owners, not the breed. The media has amplified the bad press on this breed.

There is far more to the story you just quoted.

Very accurate. These animals are dangerous. I have owned a Doberman, a rotweilder, and a wolf-sheppard mix. All three of these animals are loyal and were family members that behaved very well. My son, when he moved away from home adopted a pit bull; now I am an animal lover and would not harm any beast (I do not eat meat) and most animals, to include wild animals will walk right up to me. This dog hated me, I would walk into the room and his hackles would go up, he tried his best to get at me. Well, I said nothing. I was not initially afraid of this animal, I did not do anything to cause it to be afraid. It just simply hated anyone other than my son. Then my son got married and the dog behaved the same way toward his new wife. He got rid of it. I am of the opinion that this is one breed of dog that should be allowed to die off. I think that all of these animals need to be neutered and not allowed to breed. Recently in AZ a pit bull attacked a 4 year old child, this was the second time the dog had attacked a person. But, the people in AZ petitioned to save it. The judge did the PC thing, ordered the dog to have all its front teeth removed and never to be adopted out (they left the teeth used for chewing food in place). Perhaps all pit bull owners should consider the removal of the "biting" teeth and neutered. It would be safer for everyone concerned. Those that love their pits would still have their dog, but it would no longer be a danger and in 12 years or so the breed would disappear. End of problem.

I totally agree with you on the pit bull dog my brother in law and his wife had a pit bull mix. That dog tore holes in the bedroom doors and actually ate its way though a wall by their patio door to get outside. Their daughter had a baby and lived with them. Everything went along well until the dog bit the baby. That pit bull mix is no longer alive. I don't know why we have to wait for some event to occur like a death to put these dogs down. I know that there will still be the drug crowd that will bring them in illegally but at least keep them out of the hands of people with small children or the elderly.

I don't like pit bulls either. I have seen them in action and it is not pretty. However, that being said, where would you draw the line??? 100% pit bull?, 50% pit bull?, 5% pitbull? The dividing line between breeds is rather arbitrary. How different are Labradors, Goldens, and Labrador-Golden mixes. I think that if owners of uncontrolled vicious dogs had to serve jail time with million dollar compensatory claims, it might discourage some of the folks who like to strut their animal kingdom version of a loaded gun.

There will always be an underground cult, whether it is cock fighting (which is horrible), greyhound racing (cruel, don't get me started on this issue), and dog fighting. But, you are right. We should take action before more people are attacked. I know that there are some that love their pits and I understand, but removal of the biting teeth and neutering is a solution that is not cruel to the dog; they live quite well without the teeth and the...., good for the loving owners because they get to keep the animal and some peace of mind.

If the neutering had the same effect on the pit bull that it does on horses and cattle that might be all it would take but I think that there would have to be studies done on that.

Dr. Race Foster, D.V.M., who writes for the pet education website Doctors Foster and Smith, explains that androgenic hormones, of which testosterone is the most important, affect many behaviors in dogs, including sexual and aggressive actions. “Regardless of which category [of behavior] we are talking about,” he writes, “most of the unwanted characteristics or conditions are caused by the male hormone testosterone, which is produced within the testicle.” Removing the testicles effectively puts a stop to these unwanted behaviors. It is not 100 percent effective in every case, but it sure would go a long way in reducing the amount of attacks. But, Dr Foster says that the surgery should be done before the dog's 1st birthday. By that time, it is more than just hormone; it is by all accounts part training/treatment and hormone.

That is of course a loaded question and if one guesses wrong someone else usually pays the consequences of that decision. I saw a show awhile back and it featured a german sheperd-wolf combination. I believe it was a 50/50 combination like wolf male top german sheperd female. But the interesting feature was when this dog/wolf grew up the owner played with the dog and had a relation with the animal. When playing with this animal the animal would play like a dog and they would wrestle and goof around and then out of the blue the animal would for some unforeseen reason turn into full wolf in its actions. They never figured out what the trigger was but when the trigger happened you would fear for your life. This may be something that is similar in the pit bull. However which combination would finally be acceptable in all cases only time and experimentation would tell that story and even then are you willing to take the chance that your dog may not have a throwback to the original.
