The simple fact is that the Statute of Liberty is an inanimate object that doesn't speak. This is just more bullshit from the hyper right.
The only thing the Statue of Liberty says is what is inscribed on her-words about "give me you ....." immigrants, in short, a message the hyper right rejects. Keep the goddamn immigrants out-a direct contradiction to what the Statue of Liberty is all about.
So they put their own words in a statue's mouth. Lame beyond words.

Yeah, so we spend maybe more than the next 30 countries combined, including Russia and China, than the 39 countries we currently spend more that for "defense' spending.
A little lower a profile and a little less time spend intervening in the business of other countries would do us some good. For once.

How did that type of rhetoric work out for Boy George? You might want to read up on the last chapters of his life.
boy brian, i know all about it. however pig-headed he was...he was still a leader.

You really should seek counseling, having such suicidal thoughts.

But they like Spiderman and other fictional characters too. I think they eat too much red meat, because all the hormones in it have got them stuck in puberty.
Love it! Right up there with "Proud to be an American"!
I see the main racist and hate monger is out early today.

Yeah, it gives me the same type of lump in my throat as when they played taps for George Patton, Strom Thurmond, Joe McCarthy, and J. Edgar Hoover.
I don't know what planet you live on. The photos of warm fuzzy welcoming of "huddled masses" is strictly good old boy delusions. My parents, children of immigrants, were welcomed with such remarks as, "You're lucky we let you live in this country"...and accusations of being "Christ Killers".
Sorry "Leave it to Beaver" was just fiction. Its not coming back, because the only place it existed was on a studio lot.

It's an uplifting, patriotic song. Not everything needs to make some political point.

Brian, I've read quite a few of your posts and could not understand the cause of your intense anger against Americans. After this post, I finally see why. "Your grandfather and grandmother were immigrants" makes a very large statement. You experienced racism growing up and it has consumed you. It should have made you a better person but instead, you let it manifest itself and turn you into a raging liberal (my opinion). You place blame on old racist angry white men. These same old white men are what made America the greatest country on this earth, so much so, that everyone wants to immigrate here. That among many other things.
I can document my relatives back to England so I can say that they had a part in making this country great like it is. How about you, can you say the same? This is not meant to be facetious, but it appears that you have a good education through the tools made available by these angry old racist white men. (Actually, we all know, many other colors of persons helped make America what it is but the originals were white). Why are you so angry at the people who provided you with the riches you've used?
I hope you see that I have not called you any names, hoping to remain civil.

I don't understand this response. Do you not have love for our country? It's been an amazing country...like no other. Please explain why you want to change it. In your own words (and can you leave out any sarcasm this time, please)? I just want to understand what you want to change America into, and why.

This is not being wiseass. The statue of liberty was a gift from France.

But it is doing exactly that.
Personally, this song was in no way inspiring but rather an urge for contemplation. What came immediately to mind was xenophobia: "Xenophobia can manifest itself in many ways involving the relations and perceptions of an ingroup towards an outgroup, including a fear of losing identity, suspicion of its activities, aggression, and desire to eliminate its presence to secure a presumed purity.[2] Xenophobia can also be exhibited in the form of an "uncritical exaltation of another culture" in which a culture is ascribed "an unreal, stereotyped and exotic quality".[3] Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action urges all governments to take immediate measures and to develop strong policies to prevent and combat all forms and manifestations of racism, xenophobia or related intolerance, where necessary by enactment of appropriate legislation including penal measure.[4]"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XenophobiaIn 1964 America, most saw the desegregation movement as a commie plot (much as they saw women wanting equal pay, workers wanting safety regulations, and WWI vets wanting what the government had promised, and were attacked by active servicemen). Southerners "rose up from the flames" to blow up Black churches and kill children, then killed some of the civil rights workers.
Patriotism is a disgrace and should become one of the eight deadly sins. Humanity, in which our loyalty truly lies, cannot support this monstrous idea. Loving our neighbor is the only basis for Civilization.
