Here in China I have bought an apartment... I paid a one time property tax on it... It Now belongs to me (there is a seventy Year limit on ownership)...
I cannot give it to my children (Although they would retain ownership in the Sad case of my death), but I can sell it to my daughter (or anyone I want really) for a dollar... And she would pay a one time property tax for it as well...
Chinese are amazed at the fact that our governments can take our homes (bought and paid for) if we don't pay taxes every year...

Mexico is somewhat similar. An American or Canuck needs a sponsor to rent (not buy) a property and but then there is not time limit and it can't be passed on. That was the way it was years ago, may have changed but I doubt it. Mexico had very strict control of who entered their country. Mike
